풍납토성 평기와의 제작공정에 따른 제작기법 특징과 변화 (The Development and Characteristics of the Manufacturing Process of the Flat Roof Tiles of Pungnaptoseong)

초록

한성백제 기와 중 다양한 형식과 월등한 출토량이 확인된 유적은 단연 풍납토성이다. 이 유적에서 출토된 기와를 검토함으로 한성백제 기와를 이해하는데 도움이 될 것으로 보인다.
기와의 제작과정은 전통 한식 기와에 대한 제작과정을 토대로 채토, 흙고름, 흙벼늘 작업, 소지 작업, 기와 성형, 건조, 구움 순으로 나가게 된다. 본고에서는 이들 제작과정을 역으로 유적에서 출토된 평기와를 대상으로 관찰·분석하여 살펴보고자 하였다.
이를 토대로 보면 풍납토성, 즉 한성백제 중앙지역의 평기와 특징은 다음과 같이 요약될 수 있다. 정질을 중심으로 하는 태토, 점토띠와 점토판 소지 사용, 사절흔 확인 및 종방향 다무락 쌓기, 무와통과 원통와통·모골와통의 혼용, 전면 혹은 상하단 물손질 및 깎기 조정, 무문과 격자문을 위주로 하는 문양, 단판 타날판을 이용한 종방향 타날, 갈대 통보와 윤철흔·합철흔 확인, 다양한 와도처리 흔적, 3분할 기와, 짧은 등기와 및 유단식 암키와 존재, 형식적인 미구부 그리고 회색계 위주와 갈황색계 색조의 존재 및 연질 위주 등 다양하게 나타난다.
시기에 따른 제작기술은 3분할 기와의 감소, 격자문과 선문의 선호도 증가, 미구기와 증가에 따른 수키와 유단식 와통 증가, 모골 와통 증가 등으로 변화된다.
이러한 제작기법상의 특징으로 미루어 평기와의 경우 초기에는 낙랑의 영향과 재지의 토기공인의 제작전통이 공존하여 계속 이어지게 되는데 후기에 들어 고구려의 영향도 일부 받은 것으로 추정된다.
제작기술의 변화는 현재까지 모든 유구에서 단절적 발전과정을 거치기보다 점진적인 발전을 이루는 것으로 보인다. 이러한 변화를 감지할 수 있었던 것은 평기와의 선별 조사가 아닌 전수 조사를 통해 확인할 수 있다. 선별조사는 엄청난 기와 출토량에 기인하는 것일 수 있겠지만 평기와의 변화에 대한 보다 풍부한 정보를 획득하기 위해 전시기의 기와가 이런 전수 조사방법을 선택하여 실시해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Amongst the roof tiles of the Hanseong phase of the Baekje Kingdom, those from Pungnaptoseong are of the highest quality and comprise a wide range of styles. Therefore, an examination of these Pungnaptoseong roof tiles will contribute to a better understanding of Hanseong Baekje roof tiles.
The production process of the roof tiles consists of the following stages: clay selection, the addition of plant fiber to the clay, base clay preparation, roof tile forming, drying and firing. This paper attempts to examine this process from the production traces that can be found on excavated flat roof tiles.
The characteristics of roof tiles from the Baekje center (i.e. Pungnaptoseong) in the Hanseong period are as follows: crystalloid clay composition, the use of clay belts and boards, cutting traces and the lumping of rectangular clay sections in a horizontal direction, the facts different types of molds were used(e.g. the tube-shaped mold and the ‘mogol’ mold) or were not used at all, the trimming or paring of the overall surface of the upper and lower sides using water, the absence of decorative patterns or the use of a checkered design, the use of a short paddle used in a horizontal direction when producing the checkered design, trace using reed instead of fabric, sewing traces called ‘yuncheolheun’ and ‘hapcheolheun’, a variety of traces associated with side division, roof tiles divided into three sections, the presence of short back-roof tiles and ‘L’-shaped concave roof-end tiles, the stylized connection parts of convex roof tiles, the generally soft texture and gray or brownish color of the roof tiles.
Diachronic change in production techniques can be observed in the decrease in roof tiles divided into three sections, the increase in the preference for checkered and line patterns, the increase in the number of ‘L’-shaped and concave roof-end tile molds according to the increase of convex roofing tile with connection parts, and the increase of ‘mogol’ molds.
The production technology of these Hanseong Baekje flat roof tiles appears to have been influenced by both traditional and Lelang ceramic traditions. Goguryeo ceramic technology also appears to have had an influence in the late Hanseong period.
It can be suggested that flat roof tile production experienced a gradual, rather than punctuated, developmental process. Such a trend could be confirmed because the present study attempted a total (vis-à-vis selective) investigation of the flat roof tiles. Selective studies on roof tiles are understandably undertaken due to the huge amount of excavated material but this paper demonstrates that total investigation is needed in other to obtain as much information as possible on the developmental process of roof tiles.
