초록

갈홍은 위진시기의 다양한 양생술을 종합정리함으로써, 도교의 토대를 닦은 인물이다. 그의 호이자 저술명이기도 한 『抱朴子』는 내편과 외편으로 되어 있다. 외편은 경세를 논하는 유가서이고, 내편은 신선존재의 증명과 다양한 양생술을 논하고 있는 도가서라고 할 수 있다. 내편의 「仙藥」편과 「登涉」편에는 약초채집자의 채집행위에 관한 내용이 생생하게 실려 있다. 그런데 특이하게도 그들의 행위는 대부분 일종의 擬似과학인 術數에 의해 결정되었다. 본고는 『포박자』 「등섭」편과 「선약」편에 나오는 다양한 술수양상을 검토하고 그 배후의 세계관을 도출한 연구의 보고서다.
채집을 위해 떠나가는 날, 떠나가는 방위, 채집시기, 채집행위 직전에 행하는 행위에 이르기까지 거의 모든 것은 술수에 의해 정해졌다. 예를 들어 채집을 위해 떠나는 날은 산한일이어서는 안 되고, 반드시 천보시여야 한다. 그리고 약초를 채집하는 시기는 왕상일이어야 한다. 그런 길일 중에 보일과 의일 등이 있다. 寶日은 지지가 천간에서 태어나는 즉, 甲午나 乙巳와 같은 날이고, 義日은 천간이 지지에서 태어나는 癸酉같은 날이다. 좀 더 특이한 예로 우보법이라는 것도 있다. 우보법은 새의 걸음걸이를 흉내 내는 일종의 주술적 행위로, 다른 행위에 부수적인 행위였다.
이런 술수는 천간과 지지를 오행으로 해석하는 즉, 소위 간지오행에 의해 얻어진 것이다. 이런 간지오행의 술수는 단순히 현상의 패턴을 찾아내고, 그런 패턴의 준수를 의무화하는 익히 알려진 동양의 세계관으로는 설명하기 어렵다. 갈홍이 보았던 세상은 온갖 정령들이 위계에 따라 행위하는 주술적 세계였고, 약초도 주술적 존재였다. 주술적 존재의 힘을 얻기 위해 약초채집자는 음양의 조화를 따라야했고, 그것이 간지오행의 배후에 있는 관념이었다. 도홍경으로 이어지는 한약학의 고리역할을 한 갈홍은 경험합리적 지식으로 무장하고 있었을 것이다. 그러나 그런 지식은 주술적 세계관에 의해 재해석되었다. 갈홍의 세계관은 주술적이었고, 주술적 의례를 수행했던 그는 경험지식으로 무장한 주술가였다.

영어초록

In this paper, I tried to investigate the world-view of herbalists and their shu shu(術數) in the period of wei jin(魏晉) through the chapters Xian Yao(仙藥) and Deng She(登涉) of Bao Pu Zi(抱朴子). The word ben cao(本草) first appear in han shu(漢書) jiao si zi(郊祀志). Yamada Keiji(山田慶兒) insisted that ben cao dai zhao having acted in shen she(神社, sacred shrine) built by Han Wu Di(漢武帝) was the first formal group of chinese herbalists. Their world view was magical.
The herbalists in Bao Pu Zi made magical calculation with the concept of Five Phases and tian gan(天干, mystical numbering system of sky), di zhi(地支, mystical numbering system of earth) and discreetly selected day and time on the basis of that calculation to depart from their home, enter mountain and pick mystical medical herb. They should have some things, white chicken, white dog, white salt when leave home. For example bao ri(寶日) or yi ri(義日) is a good day to start for mountain. Yu bu(禹步) is a magical stepping practiced before picking herb. Yu bu, an accompanying magical ceremony was practiced with treatment far before the period of ben cao. We can see that in Wu Shi Er Bing Fang(五十二病方).
Following the pattern of qi(氣) is a general way that ancient chinese took to get fit their life into the order of world. It is well described in Shang Gu Tian Zhen Lun(上古天眞論) and Si Qi Diao Shen Da Lun(四氣調神大論), chapters of Su Wen(素問). They are based on the experientially supported world view because the writers of Su Wen(素問) have empirically known they could get good real result by following the pattern of qi. There is the same way in mystical herb when Ge Hong tells to herbalists to enter mountain in march and september. But it is the one case following the pattern of qi we can find in Bao Pu Zi The herbalists' world-view in Bao Pu Zi was magical. They imitated the action of deity to get its power. There were many gods in the world that herbalists see. Especially mountain has the god of mountain, various demons and immortals. Even magical herbs were deities under the god of mountain hierarchically. Herbalists should perform a religious ceremonies after cleaning the body and mind to get the magical power of herb.
The calculations and selections of day made in Bao Pu Zi are not empirically and rationally supported. How can we explain the reason for calculations and selections of day and time not following the empirical way. Eliade introduced the idea that the action of a smith who abstracts metal from mineral is an imitation of delivery of the earth in his prominent book Forgerons et Alchimistes. I think his idea is useful to explain some of the herbalists' mystical calculations in Bao Pu Zi. Year, month, day and time is explained by tian gan(天干), di zhi(地支) and Five Phases in east asia. Then a day selected by herbalists is a day that yang(陽) and yin(陰) is in harmony not confliction.
The herbalists in Bao Pu Zi, founders of ben cao, had the empirical knowledge. But their mystical world view made them interpret the knowledge into being mystical. Theirs was mystical view that every beings influencing each other with the grade of rank. And They can get the mystical power of herb by following the harmony of yang(陽) and yin(陰).
