「핫피엔도」 소고- 제이팝의 원류를 찾아서 - (A Study on HAPPY END As the Origin of J-POP)

This paper is a study to examine the specific aspects of diversity of J-pop focusing on three albums of HAPPY END(はっぴいえんど) that was active in the early 1970s as the beginning period of J-pop, while its infancy was normally known as the end of 1988 or 1989.
In the first album, "Happy Endo" (1970), Happy End music represented the 70s of individualism and dealt with death, personal choice and the contradiction of solidarity. They created original Japanese rock music, blended the identity of the United States and Japan, and reconstructed(destructed).
The second album “Kazemachi Roman 風街ろまん”(1971) explores the harmony between Japanese and rock music and reconstructs "Tokyo in Memories" in background of the Tokyo Olympics. This album sings about a romance where past and present intersect. Takashi Matsumoto's statement, "I just don't want to imitate Western music," reflected the last number title of the album. Otaki had already come up with all the ideas for his solo album, and Hosono wanted to include a song in his planned solo album. In this regard, it is fair to say that the final album is an omnibus-style album in which each member pursued their new styles.
With these factors, it was confirmed that HAPPY END is an important starting point in the Japanese music scene and has influence over the formation and evolution of J-pop. Therefore, I would like to declare HAPPY END the origin of J-pop and such an outstanding band in the history of Japanese popular music.
