    초록

    This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness between lumbar stabilization exercise and lumbar strengthening exercise programs in increasing the cross-sectional areas of multifidus and psoas major muscles; and between the pain intensity and lumbar function of patients with lumbar discogenic pain. 46 patients diagnosed with lumbar L3-L4 level discogenic pain participated in an 8-week exercise program and were randomly divided into a lumbar stabilization exercise group and a lumbar strengthening exercise group. To measure the cross-sectional areas of both left and right multifidus and psoas major muscles, computed tomography at the upper endplate of L4 was used. Pain intensity and lumbar disability were measured before and after each exercise using, respectively a visual analogue scale and Oswestry disability index. After 8 weeks of each exercise program, a comparison of value was made between the lumbar stabilization and lumbar strengthening groups.
    The results of the study are as follows;1) After 8 weeks, of each exercise intervention, it was shown that the VAS and ODI were significantly decreased in both groups(p<0.05). In comparing the VAS and ODI between the 2 groups, it was shown that there was a more significant decrease in the lumbar stabilization exercise group than the lumbar strengthening exercise group(p<0.05).
    2) After 8 weeks, of each excercise intervention, it was shown that the cross-sectional areas of multifidus and psoas major muscles significantly increased in both groups(p<0.05). In comparing the cross-sectional areas of multifidus and psoas major muscles between the 2 groups, it was shown that there was a more significant increase in the lumbar stabilization exercise group than the lumbar strengthening excercise group(p<0.05).
    3) After 8 weeks, of each exercise intervention, there was significant positive correlation between reduce of VAS, ODI and increase of left and right multifidus cross-sectional areas in lumbar stabilization exercise group(p<0.05).
    In recommendation, the data from this research can help make a more effective rehabilitation program for lumbar discogenic pain patients. Futhermore more studies can be done in the rehabilitation of lumbar degenerative disc disease patients.
