초록

이 연구는 영화 <서편제>와 삽입된 판소리 <심청가>의 매개 과정을 검토하고여주인공의 삶과 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 영화<서편제>에 대한 기존의 논의들은 주로 텍스트 분석에 집중되어 있었는데, 이 글에서는 판소리가 지닌 음악의표현적 측면까지 확장하여 여주인공의 삶을 조명해 보고자 한 것이다.
송화가 부르는 판소리는 어떤 상상적 구조로 연결되고 그것이 지닌 ‘함의’나‘지향성’을 파악하는 과정은 서사를 이해하고 의미화 하는 데에 기여할 수 있을것이다. 송화가 부르는 판소리 <심청가>는 서사적 매개체로 감지되는데, 이를전반부인 ‘심청이 밥 빌러가는 대목’과 ‘범피중류’, 후반부 ‘심청이 인당수에빠지는 대목’과 ‘심봉사 눈뜨는 대목’을 통해 순차적으로 살펴보았다. 이는 송화가 판소리꾼으로 득음에 이르는 과정과 삽입 판소리에서의 심청이 심황후에이르는 서사의 과정이 음악과 함께 유기적으로 결합되어 소외된 여성의 주체적자기발견으로 거듭나게 됨을 분석하고자 한 것이다.
영화 <서편제>에 삽입된 판소리 <심청가>의 대목들은 공통적으로 음악의선율과 템포의 조절, 수직/수평적인 움직임과 상호적으로 작용한다. 이는 얽힘과풀림, 긴장과 해소, 만남과 헤어짐, 죽음과 부활과 같은 순환론적 세계관으로나아가는 지향성으로 이해된다. 송화와 판소리 <심청가>에서의 심청이 자신의역경과 고난을 승화해 나감을 보여주듯, 음악에서도 긴장과 대립, 선율이나장단에서 모순과 극적인 전환을 통해 이러한 서사성이 재현되고 있음을 발견하였다.
이와 같은 분석에 따라, 영화 <서편제>와 삽입 판소리 <심청가>에서 재현되는 여성의 삶은 사회로부터 소외된 상황에서도 주체적으로 자신을 마주하고, 더 나은 성장을 위해 희생과 고난을 감내하며 ‘자기 돌봄’을 수행해 나아간다.
향유자들은 송화가 심청 서사를 모방하듯 그녀가 부르는 <심청가>에서 모방적인 참여와 경험을 공유한다. 이는 판소리의 이면을 그리는 일이다. 다시 말해, 판소리의 서사적 매개를 통한 정서반응과 인지과정이 심청의 서사와 송화의삶을 자신의 감정과 동일시하고 체화하도록 이끄는 것이다.
이 연구에서 송화가 부르는 삽입 판소리 <심청가>는 그녀의 주체적 의지가담긴 ‘목소리’로 수행된다는 점에서 <서편제>의 여주인공에 대한 의미를 새롭게확장하였다고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 다만, <서편제>에 삽입된 판소리 <춘향가>, 그 외의 부수적인 영화 음악과의 관계까지 살펴보지 못한 것은 연구의 한계이며, 앞으로의 과제로 남기고자 한다.

영어초록

This is a research article that examines the mediation process of the pansori "Simcheongga" inserted in the movie "Seopyeonje" and explores the life and meaning of the female protagonist. While previous discussions of the film "Seopyeonje" have mainly focused on textual analysis, this article aims to shed light on the expressive aspects of the music in "Simcheongga" to understand the narrative and meaning of the female protagonist's life.
The process of understanding the "meaning" and "directionality" that the pansori "Simcheongga" contains is important in understanding and contextualizing the narrative. The "Simcheongga" sung by Songhwa is perceived as a narrative medium, which is examined sequentially through the "Simcheong begging for food" and "Bempijungryu" in the early parts, and the later parts, which includes the "Simcheong falling into the river" and "Simbongsan waking up". This analysis aims to show how Songhwa's path to becoming a pansori singer and the narrative of Simcheong's journey towards becoming a queen are organically combined with music, resulting in the protagonist's self-discovery as an excluded woman.
The sections of "Simcheongga" inserted into the movie "Seopyeonje" all have a commonality of regulating the melody and tempo of the music and the vertical/horizontal movements that interact with each other. This is understood as a directionality towards a cyclical worldview such as entanglement and disentanglement, tension and resolution, meeting and parting, death and resurrection. As shown by Simcheong's own hardships and sufferings in Songhwa's pansori performance, the narrative of the music is reproduced through tension, contradiction, and dramatic turns in melody and rhythm.
Based on this analysis, the life of women represented in "Seopyeonje" and "Simcheongga" is characterized by a self-confrontation even in situations where they are excluded from society, persevering through sacrifices and hardships for their own self-care and better growth. Audience members participate in the performance of pansori "Simcheongga" by Songhwa as an imitation of Simcheong's narrative and share emotional experiences. This is the process of drawing the underlying meaning of pansori, which leads emotional reactions and cognitive processes to identify with and embody the narratives of Simcheong's journey and Songhwa's life.
In this research, the pansori "Simcheongga" sung by Songhwa is viewed as a "voice" containing her independent will, which expands the meaning of the female protagonist in "Seopyeonje". However, the significance of the pansori "Chunhyangga" inserted in "Seopyeonje" and other parts requires further research.
