'전승'과 '창작'의 관점에서 본 판소리 정체성의 재규정과 제언 (Re-definition of the Generic Identity of Pansori with in the Perspective of Modern Succession and Transformation)

초록

판소리는 한국의 대표적 문화유산으로서, 멀티 미디어를 통한 장르 변경과 다양한 언어로 번역되면서 글로벌 차원의 하위문화(subculture), 또는민속 음악·공연의 지위를 형성했다. 판소리의 세계화와 현대적 장르로의확산은 전통 판소리와 균열 지점을 생성하면서 판소리에 대한 재정의를요청하고 있다.
사설 짜기의 측면에서 판소리의 본질을 재조명한다면 이는 ‘다성성’의구현으로 정의할 수 있다. 판소리는 향유층, 언어생활, 교양문화, 예술 향유 등 다층적의 차원에서 다성성의 요소가 삼투되어 있는 복합적 문예 장르다. 따라서 전통 판소리를 계승하거나 장르 변형을 할 경우, 또는 새로운창작 판소리를 제작할 경우, 판소리의 사설 짜기의 원리를 활용하여 판소리 정체성을 유지하고 발전시킬 필요가 있다. 판소리의 사설이 지닌 다성성은 다음과 같은 차원에서 구성된다.: 첫째, 시간성과 창작의 차원에서판소리는 역사성과 당대성, 전통과 유행을 포용한다. 둘째, 공간성과 수용층 차원에서 판소리는 지역성과 세계성, 토속성과 보편성을 통섭한다. 셋째, 사회성의 차원에서 판소리는 신분·젠더·세대·지식 위계를 둘러싼갈등을 포착하고 카니발적 화해를 구현한다. 넷째, 정보성의 차원에서 판소리는 서민과 상층부의 일상생활을 백과사전처럼, 풍속정보지적 망라하여 보여준다. 다섯째, 감정과 감성 의 차원에서 판소리는 사람이 일생동안겪는 감성을 만화경적으로 재현한다. 또한 감정의 수사는 감정 상태의 육체적 반응을 재현하는 형식으로 표현된다. 여섯째, 수사학의 차원에서 판소리는 다성성·혼종성·대화성의 요소를 유희적으로 재현하며, 이는 열거법을 활용한 치레 구성으로 구현된다.
이와 같은 이러한 판소리의 사설 구성 원리는 앞으로 판소리를 ‘창작’하고 ‘전승’하는 실제 작업에 활용할 수 있다. 판소리 창작자나 전승자는 새로운 스토리를 짜면서 세대·젠더·지역·민족·국적·인종 등의 차이를 고려할 수 있다. 또한 창작 판소리를 통해 세계적인 유행가가 탄생될 수 있으며, 전통 판소리가 팬덤 문화를 형성한 것과 같은 새로운 문화 유형을 창안할 수 있는 역량이 판소리의 정체성 안에 잠재되어 있다.

영어초록

As a representative of Korean cultural heritage, p’ansori has expanded its scope by engaging in multi-media and attempting to change the genre. The modern adaptation and globalization of p’ansori endows it with a reputation as a “subculture” and an “ethnic performance” of Korean culture. The expansion of its genre, however, also has a negative side. It produces a growing chasm between traditional and contemporary p’ansori. This problem appeals for a definition of the authenticity of p’ansori.
In discussing authentic features in the narrative of p’ansori, I find it useful to employ the concept of “polyphony,” a Bakhtinian term. Based on this term,I show that polyphonic features permeate the p’ansori text, and I suggest that the polyphonic features of p’ansori should constitute contemporary p’ansori in the ongoing process of adaptation and re-creation.
Also, this paper analyzes the polyphonic aspects of p’ansori by categorizing them into six elements: time, space, reality, knowledge, emotion, and rhetoric.
First, I contend that p’ansori engages in temporal expression by juxtaposing the past and the present and combining tradition and contemporary fashion.
Second, p’ansori not only describes the landscape and geographical background but also expresses locality and universality by mingling native culture with worldwide perspective. Third, p’ansori deals with the description of social reality by manifesting the tensions in social stratification, but it also reveals a reconciliatory process by commingling and reversing hierarchical relationships, thus taking on the form of “carnival literature.” Fourth, p’ansori contains encyclopedic knowledge and memory on every level of society. Fifth,p’ansori deals with various kinds of feelings that every human being experiences in one’s lifetime. The emotional landscape, however, is represented by the description of physical reactions and conditions rather than through direct expression. Sixth, the rhetoric of p’ansori demonstrates polyphony, hybridity,and dialogue. For instance, by the narrative skill of ch’ire, a singer can enumerate various words without any syntactic or grammatical restraint.
These aspects should be considered in the re-creation and transmission of p’ansori. I argue that the new p’ansori producers and singers must engage the differences of generation, gender, region, ethnicity, and culture, but the new compositions need to be based on the features that I have found in the text of p’ansori. Despite concerns and problems, contemporary p’ansori has great potential. Through the modernizing process, p’ansori is gaining recognition as a well-known genre and a popular song, and I wish to see the newly created p’ansori not only widely consumed but also creating a fandom.
