초록

This study is to throw some light on the social and cultural historic significance of the religious practices of german pietism in the 17th and early 18th century. The term ‘Pietism’ refers to the ecclesial renewal movement emphasizing the fundamental necessity of an inward personal relationship with God as the source of spiritual renewal for both church and society. Emerging in late seventeenth and early eighteenth century Germany, Pietism was given expression and guidance through the theological programs and visions of Philip J. Spener, August H. Francke, and Johann. A. Bengel.
Pietism was attempt to resist the breakthrough of secularizing tendencies in the contemporary world. Pietist movements forecasted not only a better man but also a better church and ultimately in a better world. For this purposes, they took steps toward the reformation of life. They themselves were modern in building up a counteroffensive of rechristianization, using all contemporary means of communication and organization in the public sphere and adapting their own traditions to new social and cultural contexts. Pietism not only contributed to the dismantling of the old but also the Enlightenment culture that characterized the new. Consequently, German pietism achieved the various modern performance.
