北學派의 藝術認識과 審美觀 硏究 (A Study on the Art Awareness and the View of Aesthetics of the School of Northern Studies)

초록

북학파는 실천의지적 實心ㆍ實事ㆍ實地를 강조하고 백성들의 생활향상을 위한 이용ㆍ후생을 적극 주장한다. 이러한 실심적 학풍과 사상은 북학파의 실심적 예술을 형성하는데 기초가 되었다. 본 연구는 북학파의 실심적 예술인식과 실용적 심미추구의 특징을 분석하고, 자연생태의 보존과 활용을 통한 환경친화적 예술을 지향한 그들의 사상을 알아보고자 한다.
북학파는 예술을 목적론적 공리성과 존재론적 심미성으로 이해한다. 세교의 측면에서 예술의 미적가치와 공리성을 적극적으로 긍정한 점은 유의할 만하다. 나아가 개성적 문예창출로써 자아의식을 발현코자 하였으며, 예술을 통한 자긍심 고취를 중요하게 여겼다. 신분적 한계에 놓여 있었던 서얼출신들이 관직진출에 연연하지 않고 전문적인 기량과 함께 예능인으로서 자기세계에 천착함으로써 보다 자유롭게 자신들의 정감을 표출할 수 있었던 것은 하나의 반증이라고 할 수 있다.
조선조 18세기는 그간의 관념적 사유에서 벗어나 眞ㆍ癖을 통한 사실주의적이며 독창적인 심미경향을 나타냈다. ‘卽物’을 통한 ‘寫眞’과 ‘眞物態’로써 사실적 회화를 추구했다. 중국화풍과 성리학의 전통과 틀에서 벗어나 天機ㆍ性靈의 자유로운 발산을 통하여 인간의 자아ㆍ개성ㆍ본능 등을 긍정하고 예술자체의 효용을 극대화 하는데 주력했던 것이다.
북학파는 자연과 사물의 합리적 이용을 주장했다. 각 사물의 올바른 가치인식의 기준은 곧 모든 것이 있어야 할 곳에 있는 各得其所의 원칙에 바탕을 두었다. 분수에 맞게, 하고 싶은 일을 해도 능력과 적성에 맞게, 적절한 균형을 이루는 것을 근간으로 하는 것을 말한다.
본 논문을 통하여 확인한 것은 無用之用과 道無所不在의 莊子的 思惟, 실용과 심미의 유기적 조화를 통하여 환경 친화적 예술을 추구하였다는 점이다. 이는 곧, 교조화된 성리학에서 벗어나 북학파의 포괄적 실학정신이 예술분야에 그대로 구현되었다는 것을 의미한다. 아울러 중화중심적 문화전통으로부터 탈피하여 事大에서 用大로, 反淸에서 克淸으로의 발상 전환을 통한 민족의식의 각성을 촉구한 것은 오늘날 우리의 예술이 지향해야 할 바에, 하나의 지표로서 여전히 유효하다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Among the literati of school of northern studies, especially Daeyong Hong, Jiwon Park and Jega Park empirically checked advanced artifacts and various thoughts through their journey to Qing dynasty and insisted that Joseon should introduce those from Qing dynasty and scientific technology from the West. In addition, they requested to abolish the status system and tried to improve the people’s living standards through Utility and Welfare, which made them emphasize Practical Mind(實心), Practical Matter(實事) and Practical Status(實地). These practical-minded academic traditions and thoughts became the foundation for shaping the practical-minded art of school of northern studies. This study intends to investigate how the practical science thought of the school of northern studies influences the perspective on art and the pursuit of aesthetics.
The school of northern studies comprehended art as a teleological utility and an ontological aesthetics. They also actively affirmed an aesthetic value and utility of art in terms of edifying the world. Moreover, they intended to reveal their self-consciousness through the creation of individual literature and express their self-esteem through art. Especially the children of concubines who had a limit of status more freely expressed their feelings with their professional skills, as an artist, by not clinging to a government position but sticking to their own world.
A realistic and creative aesthetic tendency through genuineness(眞) and habit(癖) was shown by breaking away from an abstract thought in 18th century of Joseon dynasty. People paid attention to pursuit of realistic paintings which expressed the genuineness and the genuine shape of an object through facing up to an object(卽物). They also intended to affirm human’s ego, individuality and intuition through releasing his heaven-gifted nature and natural spirit by going beyond Chinese painting styles and Neo-confucian traditions and maximize the effects of art itself.
The school of northern studies insisted on a rational utilization of nature and things. They founded their principles that all things placed where they were supposed to do to recognize the value of each thing correctly. Also, they followed the principles to let people do whatever they want depending on their abilities and aptitudes within their compass.
I figured out that the school of northern studies pursued an eco-friendly art through Chuang-tzu’s thought which emphasizes on the utilization of the useless and that there is no place where the Way doesn’t exist and through the systematic harmony of utility and aesthetics. It means their expansive thought of practical science was realized in the field of art by breaking away from the dogmatic Neo-Confucianism. In addition, it could be still effective that they urged people to be aware of the national consciousness through the conceptual shifts from the submission to the stronger to the utilization of the stronger and from opposing Qing to surpassing Qing.
