This essay examines the subversive nature of Christina Rossetti’s “Goblin Market” by demonstrating that her use of fantasy is multilateral, and reflects conflicting ideologies of the Victorian era. Unlike Rossetti’s insistence that “Goblin Market” is a fairytale for children, the poem abounds with eroticism and seething within its words are challenges to the binary gendered roles that patriarchal or Christian ideology enforces. An inverted natural order posited by fantasy allows for the subversive potential in the material world. While engaging with the goblin men who are carrying fruits, the poem makes use of the imagery of gazing in such a way that the female gaze objectifies the male figure. If Laura can be an obsessed watcher, constituted by being watched, the goblin is brought into conflicting relations with masculine nature and identity. However, Rossetti does not completely negate conventional gendered roles, nor patriarchal or Christian influences, in the poem as she often uses the images of flowers or plants in the portrayal of the girls therein. It will be argued that it is her poetic strategy to negotiate a working relationship with a Victorian audience that is invested in the ideologies of patriarchy and Christianity, while at the same time combining motherhood with the male world of goblins discloses female sexuality. It is through these inverted gender roles that the concept of the opposed binaries is examined as a constructed artifice of dubious foundation and Rossetti’s unique feminist stance is articulated.
