3․1운동 이후의 근대 주체 구성 ―식민적 근대주체의 리미널리티 (The construction of modern subject ever since the First March Movement in Korea : Liminality in modern subjectivity constituted under colonialism)

초록

1920년대는 지식인 청년을 표준으로 한 근대주체 형성 기획이 개인과 사회 수준에서 공히 추구된 시기이다. 이 논문은 이러한 개조론을 근간으로 한 근대 주체 형성의 동력을 3․1운동이 제공했다는 전제에서 시작한다. 3․1운동 前과 後의 시간대에서 진행된 세계정세와 식민주의 담론이 근대주체로의 집단적 전환에 영향을 미친 것이다. 이 연구는 3․1운동 前後의 연속적이면서 동시에 단절적이기도 한 시간대를 횡단해 온 근대 주체 형성의 궤적을 재구성하고자 하는 시도이다. 한국인을 ‘자치(자결주의)를 할 수 없는 미개한 민족’으로 규정한 일본 오리엔탈리즘과 서구 여론에 대한 민족적 대응과 저항의 열망은 이후 1920년대 실력양성과 자아개조론으로 표방된 문화주의로 轉移된다. 그러나 오리엔탈리즘에 대한 대응과 서구적 근대성에 대한 급진적 推動은 필연적으로 식민지 주체 내부에 정체성에 대한 불확실성과 모호성, 양가성을 잠복케 한다. 1920년대 중반 이후 가시화된 청년 지식층/근대주체의 양상들은 이러한 근대주체 형성의 역사적 계기들에 내재된 분열성, 양가성, 균열이 응축된 ‘리미널 페르소나’(liminal persona)의 깊은 질곡을 드러낸다.

영어초록

In 1920s, construction of modern subject/subjectivity was the primary and urgent concern for the colonized Koreans, who considered that they could achieve independence from Japan by getting support from the great powers like America and other European powers. To get positive support from the great powers, they needed to demonstrate how much they have wanted independence and freedom of their own country. Japanese orientalism that described Korean as a people of inferiority unable to manage independent countryhad prevailed over the world at that time. In this respect, I argue that the March First Movement was mobilized to prove Koreans themselves independent people who has a strong will to get liberation from Japanese occupation and then made Koreans pursue modernization. Since after the First March Movement, so-called 'Recreation of Self' movement swept over Korea. They chose to become modern by breaking up radically with legacies of the past whatever it was. I tried to reveal that the chosen identity transformation process carried out under colonial occupation was supposed to make fissures deep inside of the psyche of the colonized who made decision to recreate him/herself by adapting to the Other's perspectives. Anxiety, ambiguity and instability became being rooted in the chosen identity/ subjectivity and worked in making themselves a liminal or threshold persona, who stands on the margin between normality and abnormality. I try to require into the implications of the process of identity transformation ever since the First March Movement and defined the period as a transitional period of liminality which incites people to be instable, ambivalent and ambiguous because they stay on the threshold that is not belong to nowhere. The reconstitution of the chosen identity under colonial circumstance is hard to evade from the eyes of the Other and then was doomed to oscillates in the betwixt and between.
