해체적 그래픽디자인 해석의 틈에 대한 수용미학적 접근 (An Aesthetic of Reception Approach to the Gap of Interpretation in Deconstructive Graphic Design)

초록

20세기 후반의 포스트모더니즘은 새로운 디자인 개념을 탄생시키며 실험적이고 탈형식 유형의 그래픽디자인 영역에 큰 영향을 주었다. 명확성이 요구되는 전통적 형식의 그래픽디자인과 달리 포스트모던 영향을 받은 해체적 그래픽디자인은 모호하고 실험적인 시각표현과 불확실한 메시지 전달로 미적 경험의 주체로서 독자의 능동성과 창의성을 강조했다. 다시 말하면, 작가가 제시한 작품의도와 독자의 작품 해석태도에 대한 상호관계성이 중요해졌다는 것이다. 본 연구는 포스트모던 영향을 받은 해체적 그래픽디자인은 작가가 의도한 메시지와 독자가 해석한 메시지 사이에 간극이 생긴다고 간주하고, 이것을 ‘해석의 틈(gap of interpretation)’이라 하였다. 해체적 그래픽디자인의 틈을 유형별로 정리하기 위해 독자의 능동적 역할과 창조적 행위가 강조되는 ‘수용미학’을 제시하고, 수용미학적 해석을 3가지 관점으로 나눠-1)생소화(de-familiarization) 2)미정성(indeterminacy) 3) 구체화(concretization)-분석하여, 독자의 다양한 해석이 작품 의미를 어떻게 확장시키는지 분석하였다. 그 결과 해체적 그래픽디자인의 ‘해석의 틈’ 발생 구조에 있어서 독자의 능동적 역할을 핵심으로 도출했으며, 궁극적으로 작가의 생소화와 작품의 미정성의 다층구조, 그리고 독자의 구체화가 상호작용하는 가운데 생성되는 것이라는 ‘관계성의 현대 그래픽디자인’을 새롭게 모색하는 계기가 되었다. 아울러 문학연구의 한 방법론인 수용미학을 통하여 진보적인 그래픽디자인 표현 양식으로써 이념적 틀을 형성하고, 독자의 수용 연구를 제시할 수 있는 디자인 방법론으로서의 확장 가능성을 제시함에 있다.

영어초록

Postmodernism in the late 20th century gave birth to a new concept of design and greatly influenced the area of graphic design with its experimental approach and style that rejects traditional forms. Unlike traditional graphic design where clarity is required, deconstructive graphic design influenced by postmodernism puts emphasis on the viewers’ active participation and creativity by using ambiguous and experimental visual expressions and delivering uncertain messages. In other words, the interrelationship between an artist, the artist’s intention, and the interpretive attitude of a viewer who tries to read the intension of the work becomes important. This study presupposes that a gap is created between a message that is intended by an artist and a message that is interpreted by a viewer in modern graphic design works and calls this a “gap of interpretation.” Then, in order to categorize the gaps existing in deconstructive graphic design, this paper introduces the theory of the aesthetics of reception where emphasis is placed on active participation and the creative actions of an audience. The study analyses the aesthetics of reception approach from three aspects: 1) the de-familiarization, 2) indeterminacy, and 3) concretization. Then, it examines a variety of interpretations of viewers and how their interpretations expand the meaning of a work. As a result, audiences’ active participation be came a key component in the structure of the “gap of interpretation”in deconstructive graphic design. This prompted me to rethink “relational modern graphic design,” which claims that art works are created through the interaction between an artist’s de-familiarization method, the multi-structure of indeterminacy, and viewer’s concretization. This study also aims to build an ideological frame for a progressive graphic design style of expression using the aesthetic of reception approach-a research method in literature study-to suggest that the frame can be used as a design method to prompt new research on viewer reception.
