트라우마적 역사의 실재적 재현과 윤리의 문제: 미하엘 하네케(Michael Haneke)의 영화 <히든>(2005)을 중심으로 (The Real Presentation of Traumatic History and Its Ethical Issues: Focusing on Michael Haneke’s Film, Hidden)

초록

개인이나 집단의 트라우마적 사건이나 기억, 역사를 다룰 때, 영화가 어떤 재현 방식을 택해야 하는가의 문제, 아니 그것을 재현하는 것이 그 자체로 과연 가능한가라는 보다 근본적인 문제는 쉽게 간과할 수 없는 중요한 이슈이다. 이른바 ‘재현의 윤리’라는 문제는 영화가 이 세계를 어떻게 기억하고 또 사유하는지, 그 방식과 태도를 의미하기 때문이다.
이 때 트라우마적 역사 재현의 문제는 흔히 ‘홀로코스트는 재현될 수 있는가’의 문제에서 시작된다. 홀로코스트로 대표되는 트라우마적 역사는 재현될 수 없는 것이지만, 동시에 반드시 재현되어야만 하는 것이고, 이것이 바로 역사적 사건으로서의 홀로코스트의 역설이다. 여기에서 우리는 두 가지 측면, 즉 재현될 수 없음의 문제와, 그럼에도 불구하고 재현되어야 한다는 그 필연성의 문제 모두를 짚어보아야 한다. 역사(History)는 그 자체로 텍스트가 아니며, 따라서 비선형적이고 비재현적인 공백을 포함하는 것으로서 재현 불가능성을 지닌다. 하지만 동시에 역사는 오직 텍스트화(textualization)를 통해서만 그 실재적 역사에 접근 가능하다는 점에서, 그리고 트라우마적 역사를 ‘재현 불가능성’과 동일시하는 것은 트라우마적 경험과 재현에 대한 침묵과 회피에 지나지 않는다는 점에서 재현의 필연성 역시 지닌다.
본 논문은 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 영화연구에서 그간 모더니즘 미학과 스펙터클이라는 이분법적인 논쟁 속에서 진행되어온 트라우마 연구 경향을 넘어설 수 있는 영화 텍스트로서 미하엘 하네케의 <히든>을 분석한다. 그의 영화는 미학적 경향의 이분법을 넘어, 트라우마적 역사 자체를 전면에 내세우지 않으면서도 내러티브와 장르 속에서 알레고리와 응시를 통해 실재적 역사를 환기시킨다는 점에서 트라우마적 역사 재현에 관한 특정 위치를 점할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

When a film has to deal with the traumatic events, memories and history of individuals or groups, an important issue that cannot be easily ignored is to choose which method of representation. This issue is related to a more fundamental question as to whether or not it is possible to represent it in itself. It is because the issue of so-called ‘ethics of representation’ means the method or attitude with which a film remembers or thinks on this world.
At this time, the issue of representation of traumatic history often starts with the question ‘whether holocaust is possible to be represented or not.’ Traumatic history of which representative is holocaust is impossible to be represented. However, it must be represented, and this is the paradox of holocaust as a historical event. On this account, we must examine such both aspects as the issue of impossibility of representation and the inevitability of representation anyhow. History itself cannot be a text and therefore it has the disposition of impossibility of representation which includes non-linear and un-representable spaces. But from the fact that only through the textualization of history it is possible to approach the real history, and also from the fact that equating traumatic history with ‘the impossibility of representation’ is nothing but silence on and escaping from experience and representation, traumatic history has the inevitability of representation too.
Based on the above discussion, this study examined Michael Haneke’s Hidden as a film text, and this method seemed to get over preceding studies on trauma that had been carried out based on such dichotomous debates as modernism aesthetics and spectacles. Although the film does not place traumatic history itself in the front, it could ventilate real history through allegories and gazes in narrative and genre, thus getting over the dichotomy of aesthetic tendency. In this regard, the film can occupy a certain place in the representation of traumatic history.
