퇴계학에 관한 북한의 선행연구 비판적 고찰 - 향후 퇴계학 관련 남북한 공동연구 가능성 탐색 (A Critical Study on North Korea's Preceding Research of Toegye's Study: The Search for the Possibility of Future Collaboration of North and South Korea Regarding Toegye's Study)

초록

본 논문에서는 퇴계학에 관한 북한의 선행연구를 비판적으로 살펴보고, 향후 남북한의 연구자들이 공동으로 퇴계학을 발전시킬 방안에 대해 탐색해 보고자 하였다.
북한의 선행연구에서는 퇴계학을 유물론적 관점에서 철학사상과 사회정치사상으로 나누어 서술하는 특징이 있다. 북한의 연구자들은 퇴계의 철학사상을 리일원론(理一元論)에 기반한 신비주의적 관념론으로 규정하면서 봉건사회를 위한 정치적 사상으로 해석해 왔다. 이에 본 논문에서는 북한의 선행연구를 비판적으로 살펴보면서 퇴계학에 관한 북한 연구자들의 태도 변화에 주목하였다. 근래 북한의 선행연구에서는 성학(聖學) 공부에서 경(敬)을 강조하며 리도(理到)를 주장하는 퇴계의 윤리설을 물아통일(物我統一)의 사상으로 규정하면서 퇴계를 주자 이래 가장 권위 있는 성리학자로 평가하는 변화가 돋보인다. 이에 본 논문에서는 남북한의 연구자들이 성학 공부에 초점을 맞추어 퇴계학을 비롯한 조선유학을 공동으로 연구할 수 있는 가능성에 대해 탐색하였다.
한편, 북한의 선행연구에서는 유물론적 사회개혁의 문제에 초점을 두면서 퇴계의 사회정치사상을 봉건사회를 옹호하기 사상으로 규정해 왔다. 근래 북한의 선행연구에서는 퇴계의 사회정치사상을 봉건적 보수주의 사상이라고 부정적으로 평가하면서도 인민대중을 위한 퇴계의 사회정치사상을 일부 재조명하는 변화가 엿보인다. 무엇보다 퇴계학이 일본에 끼친 영향을 높게 평가하는 변화가 두드러진다. 이에 본 논문에서는 남북한의 연구자들이 퇴계의 사회정치사상 및 퇴계학의 국제적 위상을 공동으로 연구할 수 있는 가능성에 대해 탐색하였다.
그밖에 북한의 연구자들이 한국철학사에 관한 학문적 연구와 더불어 교육 문제에 관심을 가지고 많은 성과를 이루고 있는 것을 소개하면서, 국내에서도 퇴계학을 비롯한 조선유학에 관한 교육 문제에 관심을 가질 것을 제안하였다.

영어초록

In this thesis, the precedent research on Toegye’s study in North Korea was examined critically, and the ways to develop the research on Confucianism in Joseon including Toegye’s study were sought by integrating the precedent research in South and North Korea. In the precedent research in North Korea, Toegye is defined as a mysterious idealist based on Liilwon theory(理一元論), and Toegye’s philosophy has been regarded as a political theory for a feudal society. Accordingly, in this thesis, the precedent research in North Korea was theoretically refuted, and the changes in the attitude of the North Korean researchers on Toegye’s study were focused on. In the precedent research in North Korea, the changes stand out that Toegye’s ethical theory emphasizing respect(敬) in the study of Neo-Confucianism(聖學) is defined as a theory of Mulahtongil(物我統一), and Toegye is evaluated as the most authoritative Neo-Confucian scholar since Zhu Xi. Therefore, this thesis suggested that Toegye’s Neo-Confucian study should be focused on being free from the frame of materialism and idealism, which even the North Korean researchers are aknowledging, and the research on Confucianism in Joseon including Toegye’s study in South and North Korea needs to be integrated. On the other hand, the precedent research in North Korea, which was focused on the matter of materialistic social innovation and concludes that Toegye’s social ideology was the conservatism to defend the feudal society, was refuted, and the problem that the writings on the history of Korean philosophy or middle or high school textbooks in South Korea have neglected Toegye’s social ideology too much was pointed out. Accordingly, in this thesis, it was proposed that the meanings of the social ideology of Confucianism of Joseon including Toegye’s study should be reexamined by integrating the precedent study in South and North Korea in the system of Neo-Confucian study. Recently, North Korean researchers are also interested in the matter of education regarding the whole history of Korean philosophy, and have been making many achievements. Therefore, in addition to the academic study on Confucianism in Joseon including Toegye’s study, it should receive deep interest, too, how to educate it in the public curriculum.
