초록

본고의 목적은 게일(James Scarth Gale, 1863-1937, 한국체류 1888~1927)의 고소설 번역과 그의 번역을 둘러싼 ‘통국가적인 문맥’에 관해서 살펴보는 것이다. 게일은 40년 동안 한국에서 선교활동을 한 개신교선교사이며, 또한 『춘향전』, 『구운몽』을 번역하여 서구권에 소개한 한국의 고전번역가이기도 하다. 캐나다 토론토대 토마스피셔 희귀본 장서실에 남겨진 『게일 유고』(Gale, James Scarth Papers)에는 출판되지 않은 다수의 고소설 영역본이 존재한다. 『게일 유고』에 있어 가장 중요한 자료이자 핵심은 각 권이 대략 200쪽 분량의 책자형 자료, 총19권의 친필 『일지』(Diary)이다. 특히 『일지』18~20권에는 게일이 19세기 말 수집했던 것으로 추정되는 다수의 경판 본 국문고소설에 대한 번역물이 보인다. 본고는 이 자료들을 통해, 게일의 선교와 고소설 번역이란 두 실천이 지닌 상관성을 살피고자 했다.
첫째, 『일지』 소재 고소설 번역본이 지닌 특성을 고찰했다. 『일지』(Diary)에 수록된 <운영전>, <춘향전>, <심청전>, <토생전> 영역본에는 게일의 치열한 교정의 흔적이 남겨져 있다. 『게일 유고』속에는 4편의 번역물과 관련된 타자기로 작성된 또 다른 교정원고가 존재한다. 이는 『일지』의 친필원고를 근간으로 게일이 활자화[재번역]한 자료였다. 즉, 이 일련의 번역물은 단순히 게일의 초역물을 집적해 놓은 것이 아니라, 교정 및 재번역 과정을 거쳐 활자화 혹은 출간을 지향한 게일의 흔적이 새겨져 있는 자료였던 것이다. 그 속에는 1917년 이후 고소설을 번역 출간하고, 1910년대 이전 근대화되기 ‘옛 조선’의 문명을 보존하려 게일의 지향점이 존재하는 것이었다.
둘째, 게일의 출간물 및 유고 속에 보이는 1917년 이후 게일의 고소설 번역 실천이 지닌 의미를 살펴보았다. 게일의 번역적 실천은 고소설이 근대의 고전으로 정립되는 역사와 고소설의 언어가 고전어로 변모되는 흐름에 부응한 것이었다. 그의 고소설 번역은 한편의 문학작품 번역이라는 지평 속에서 원본의 감각을 충실히 직역하려는 번역적 지향을 보이기 때문이다. 그는 한국에 주재한 다른 외국인들과 달리 이처럼 변모되는 고소설의 위상에 조응할 수 있었고, 당시로서는 보기 힘든 번역수준을 보인 셈이다. 그 근간은 19세기 말부터 한국에서 고소설을 수집하고 읽고 번역했던 그의 한국 체험으로 말미암은 것이었다. 또한 한국의 개신교선교사라는 그의 정체성이 있었다. 게일은 이 정체성으로 말미암아 근대문학을 내면화한 서구인 독자란 입장을 고수할 수 없었다. 왜냐하면 그는 19세기말 ~20세기 초 한국의 언어-문화 속에서 성서, 찬송가 등을 한국인 독자에게 한국어로 번역해야 했던 개신교 선교사였기 때문이다. 그에게 고소설은 한국인을 이해하고 한국어 학습을 위한 교과서이자, 동시에 한국인에게 복음을 전할 중요한 문학적 형식이었던 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate James Scarth Gale’s (1863-1937, who stayed in Korea 1888-1927) translation of Korean Classical Novels and ‘trans-national context’ surrounding his translation. Gale, a protestant missionary who did mission work in Korea for 40 years, translated Korean classics, such as <Choonhyang-jeon> and <Goowoonmong>, and introduced them to Western cultures. Gale, James Scarth Papers left in Thomas Fischer rare book library, Toronto University, Canada, comprise a number of unpublished English versions of Korean Classical novels. The most important material and essence of Gale, James Scarth’s Papers is his autographic <Diary>, totally 19 volumes of book-type material about 200 pages for each. Especially, Vol. 18~20 of the <Diary> show his translation of a number of Korean Classical Novels in wood-block commercial edition, which is assumed for Gale to have collected at the end of the 19th century. Through these materials, this study was aimed to look into the interrelationship between Gale’s two practices - missionary work and translation of old Korean fictions.
First, the researcher investigated the characteristics of his translation of Korean Classical Novels featured in Gale’s Diary. Gale’s English version of <Woonyeong-jeon>, <Choonhyang-jeon>, <Shimchung-jeon> and <Tosaeing-jeon> gathered in <the Diary> leaves the trace of his intensive proofreading. Gale, James Scarth’s Papers also include another proofread manuscript related to the four pieces of translation, which he prepared with a typewriter. This is the material Gale prepared in printing type (re-translated) based on his handwritten manuscript Diary. That is, this series of translations is not just an accumulation of his first translation work but the material produced by Gale’s trouble for its print or publication through proofreading and re-translation. In his efforts lies Gale’s attempt after 1919 to preserve the civilization of ‘the old Korea’ prior to the modernization in 1910’s by translating and publishing Korean Classical Novels.
Second, what meaning can we find in Gale’s engagement in translating Korean Classical Novels after 1917 from his publications and literary remains? Gale’s translation work answered the history for Korean Classical Novels to be established into the classics of the modern age and the trend for the language in Korean Classical Novels to be changed into a classical language. It is because his translation job is characterized by an effort to translate the original literally and faithfully to its sensibility on the horizon of literary work translation. Unlike other foreigners stationed then in Korea, he could correspond to the changing status of Korean Classical Novels like this, revealing a high level of translation hard to be seen for those days. It owed to his experience of Korea in collecting and translating Korean Classical Novels in Korea from the end of the 19th century. It was impossible for him to adhere to the position as a Western reader who internalized the modern literature because he was a protestant missionary who had to translate the Bible, hymns, etc. into Korean in the shoes of Korean readers in the midst of Korean language and culture from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. For him, Korean Classical Novels were not only the textbook for understanding Koreans and learning the Korean language but also an important literary form through which he could deliver the gospel to Koreans.
