초록

This study investigates the literary texts of Jonathan Swift to analyze his writing style through a corpus stylistic method. Specifically, this study compares Gulliver’s Travels with A Tale of a Tub based on a wide variety of linguistic measures from a computer system, Coh-Metrix, in order to examine the effect of distinctive genres—narrative genre and non-narrative genre in particular—on writing style. The measures of Coh-Metrix for this study includes basic counts (the number of words, the number of sentences, the number of paragraphs, word length, sentence length), word frequency, lexical diversity (type-token ration), word information (imageability, concreteness, age of acquisition), pronoun (first person pronoun, second person pronoun, third person pronoun), connectives (causal connectives, additive connectives, temporal connectives), part of speech(noun, verb, adjective, adverb), standard readability index (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease score), syntax structure (noun density, the number of words before main verb), and cohesion (argument overlap for adjacent sentences, argument overlap for all sentences) measures. Our findings show that there are significant differences between Gulliver's Travels and A Tale of a Tub according to the results from the most Coh-Metrix measures analyzed for this study. Thereby we suggest that the writing style of Jonathan Swift is dramatically affected by the distinctive genres, narrative genre and non-narrative genre.
