『 說文通訓定聲』孚部 ‘矛’母* 聲符의 의미자질 전이 양상과 의미망 고찰 (Semantic Feature Transfer and Network Formation in the ‘矛母’ Phonetic Series of Shuowen Tongxun Ding Sheng(Section: Fu-bu))

초록

본 연구는 矛를 根源聲符로 삼는 글자들의 의미 파생 과정을 분석해 ‘矛’母 聲符의 의미망을 구축하는 것이 주된 목적이다. 연구 대상은 說文通訓定 聲(이하 정성) 孚部弟六 ‘矛’母에 수록된 글자이다. 정성은 상고음을 기준삼아 편찬한 저서로 동일한 母에 속한 글자들은 한자 구성의 세 가지 요소 중字音의 상관관계가 입증되었다고 할 수 있다. 이에 정성은 한자의 의미 연구에 있어 形, 音, 義 세 측면에서 입체적으로 분석할 수 있는 유용한 자료가 될것이라 사료된다. 본 논문은 근원성부인 矛의 의미자질을 도출하는 것으로 시작한다. 현재 한자는 상형의 색이 옅어져 자형만으로 그 의미를 파악하는 것이쉽지 않다. 또한 한자의 대다수 글자가 형성자인 것만으로도 자형이 의미에 반영된 정도가 얼마나 될지에 의구심을 갖지 않을 수 없다. 그러나 엄연히 한자는 사물을 본뜬 것에서 시작된 문자로 그 정도의 차이가 있을 뿐 자형이 의미에 상당한 영향을 끼쳤을 것이라고 생각한다. 이에 ‘矛’母에 수록된 글자의 詞 義에 矛의 자형 분석에 근거한 의미자질이 얼마나 반영이 되었는지 확인하는것이 이 연구의 주요 내용 중 하나이다. 이를 위해 우선 矛의 자형 분석을 통해 구체적인 의미자질을 도출하고 矛를 성부로 하는 글자에 矛의 의미자질이어떻게 전이되고 있는지 그 과정을 고찰한다. 다음으로 ‘矛’母에서 성부로 쓰인矛, 戊, 敄, 柔, 楙, 瞀, 婺, 務가 本義에서 引申義, 假借義로 확장되는 과정과 함께 이 글자들을 성부로 삼는 형성자에서 성부의 의미가 얼마나 반영되었는지분석함으로써 矛를 중심축으로 한 의미망을 구축해 보고자 한다.

영어초록

This study aims to construct a semantic network of Chinese characters that use ‘矛母’ as a root phonetic component by analyzing the processes of semantic derivation from such characters. The research focuses on the characters listed under the ‘矛母’ category in Shuowen Tongxun Ding Sheng (hereafter referred to as Ding Sheng), specifically within the ‘孚部第六(Fu-bu)’ section. Since Ding Sheng was compiled based on Old Chinese phonological systems, the characters grouped under the same 母 are considered to share phonetic correlations—one of the three fundamental components in Chinese character composition. For this reason, Ding Sheng serves as a highly valuable resource for Chinese character research, enabling a multidimensional analysis of characters from the perspectives of form (形), sound (音), and meaning (義).
This study begins by identifying the core semantic features of 矛, the root phonetic component. As the pictographic qualities of Chinese characters have become increasingly obscure over time, it is no longer easy to deduce their meanings solely from their graphic forms. Moreover, the fact that the majority of Chinese characters are phono-semantic compounds raises questions about the extent to which graphic form continues to reflect semantic content. Nevertheless, as Chinese characters originated from pictographic representations of physical objects, it is reasonable to assume that graphic forms, despite varying degrees of abstraction, have exerted a significant influence on meaning. One of the main objectives of this study is to examine the extent to which the semantic features inferred from the form of 矛 are reflected in the meanings of characters categorized under the ‘矛母’. To this end, the study first derives the specific semantic traits embedded in the form of 矛 through a structural analysis. It then investigates how these features are transferred to other characters that use 矛 as a phonetic component. Finally, the study analyzes how characters such as 矛, 戊, 敄, 柔, 楙, 瞀, 婺, and 務, all of which employ these components as phonetic elements, evolve in meaning—from original meanings (本義) to extended (引申義) and borrowed senses (假借義)—and assesses how much of the phonetic component's meaning is retained or transformed in these derived forms.
