초록

In the paper, we've analyzed and classified the meanings of 'Silence'in our life with examples in everyday life. The meanings of silence in communication can be classified in a group of three-'Positive','Neutral', 'Negative' just like the case of verbal communication. We can summarize them as follows.
(1) [Positive] : It can be a positive response from the listener to the speaker. [Consideration], [Sympathy],[Giving all ears] can be grouped into this category.
(2) [Neutral] : It's the case when we don't want to tell whether we are on the positive or negative side. [Disorder in judgement],[Controlling emotion], and [Nothing to say] can be grouped into this category.
(3) [Negative]: It's the case when we deny something and not permitting it. [Defiance], [Ignore], [Indifference], and [Avoiding] can be grouped into this category.
While the meanings of Silence can be conveyed clearly, they can be sometimes accepted in various ways based on the speaker's verbal situation. That's because they reflect speakers' mixed feeling and human psychology. Moreover, they can be more difficult in case of the people from the different social and cultural background.
The matter of Silence belongs to oneself as well as the other. When the other keeps in silence, the personality, facial expression, gesture and atmosphere of the conversation can be good clues to understand the meanings. Therefore, the various ways can be considered in order to get the meanings of Silence. On the one hand, the right understanding about the meanings of silence can make a good human relationship. On the other hand, Silence can be a good strategy of the communication if we can catch the right meanings of the silence and realize when, where and how we should make use of the strategy of silence.
