초록

최근 AI 기술의 급속한 발전은 애니메이터의 역할을 대체할 수 있는 다양한 장비와 프로그램의 등장으로이어지고 있다. 이러한 변화 속에서 애니메이션 작업 방식과 만화적 기법의 효능에 대한 우려가 커지고있다. 본 연구는 애니메이션 제작에서 AI가 미치는 영향을 고찰하고, 애니메이터의 역할 변화와 그에 따른 문제를 제기하고자 한다. 또한, 만화적 기법에서 애니메이터의 창의적 역량을 분석하고 향후 전개될 AI의 기술에 따른 미래 지향적인 애니메이터의 역할을 찾는 데 목적이 있다. AI의 기술력을 대척점에 두지 않고 수평적이고 개방적인 관점에서 호혜(互惠)적 관계를 유도하는 건 애니메이터가 가져야 할 필수불가결한 상호 주관적 자세인것이다. 애니메이션 제작에서 만화적 기법은 캐릭터의 성과 상황에 맞게 동작과 타이밍을 과장하여 표현함으로써 재미를 극대화하는 중요한 역할을 한다. 특히, 키 프레임을 통해 캐릭터의 움직임을 성격에 맞게 연출하는 과정에서 애니메이터의 창의성과 기술이 요구된다. 최근 넷플릭스의 <괴수 8>과 <체인소맨> 등에 사용된 만화적 기법이 실사 영화에서도 사용되고 있으며, 이는 애니메이션과 실사 영화의 경계를 넘나드는 사례를 보여 준다. 이러한 맥락에서 애니메이터는 만화적 기법을 통하여 캐릭터의 느낌을 살림으로써 작품의 질을 높여야 한다는 요청을 받게 되었다. 애니메이터는 캐릭터를 움직이게 하는 것을 넘어 줄거리와 인물에 창의성과 예술성을담아내는 중추적인 역할을 한다. 향후 AI가 스토리보드를 제작하고 기술적 문제 해결과 반복 작업 및 캐릭터 생성 등을 대체할 것이기에 애니메이터는 고도화된 기술 변화에 따른 능동적인 대처와 역할 분담 및 독자적 기능으로의 경쟁력을 반드시 충족해야 한다. 나아가 애니메이터는 AI와 동반자적 관계를 구축하여 창의성을 기술에 접목하는 능력과 AI를 합당한 방식으로 관리 및 통제하는 감독의 역할을 가져야 한다. 만화적 기법을 극대화하는 주체는 AI가 아니라 애니메이터여야 한다. AI가 애니메이터의 창의성을 뛰어넘는 날이 올 것이기에 애니메이터는 AI의 고도화된 능력을 제한적으로 관리하고 통제할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

The recent rapid development of AI technology is leading to the emergence of various equipment and programs that can replace the role of animators. Amid these changes, concerns about the effectiveness of animation work methods and cartoon techniques are growing. This study examines the impact of AI on animation production, and raises the change in the role of animators and the problems accordingly. In addition, the purpose is to analyze the creative capabilities of animators in cartoon techniques and find the role of future-oriented animators according to AI technology that will be developed in the future. It is an indispensable and intersubjective attitude that an animator should have to induce a reciprocal relationship from a horizontal and open perspective without putting AI technology in opposition. In animation production, cartoon techniques play an important role in maximizing fun by exaggerating movements and timings according to the character’s performance and situation. In particular, the creativity and skills of an animator are required in the process of directing the character’s movement according to its character through the key frame. Recently, cartoon techniques such as Netflix’s “The Host 8” and “Chainsawman” are also used in live-action films, which show an example of crossing the boundary between animation and live-action films. In this context, animators were asked to improve the quality of their works by living the feeling of the character through cartoon techniques. Beyond moving characters, animators play a pivotal role in capturing creativity and artistry in plot and characters. As AI will produce storyboards and replace technical problem solving, repetitive work, and character creation in the future, animators must actively cope with advanced technological changes, share roles, and meet competitiveness with independent functions. Furthermore, animators should have the ability to incorporate creativity into technology by establishing a partnership with AI, and play the role of a director who manages and controls AI in a reasonable way. The subject that maximizes the cartoon technique should be the animator, not the AI. Animators need to manage and control the advanced abilities of AI in a limited way, as the day will come when AI will surpass the creativity of animators.
