초록

『뿌리깊은 나무』는 『창작과 비평』, 『문학과 지성』으로 대변되는 1970년대 문화지형에서 독특한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 유신 정권 말기의 폭력적인 일련의 정치적 억압과 대중문화의 제어할 수 없는 방만을 자신들의 주된 문화정치의 타깃으로 삼고, 그 세부 내용으로는 식민지 일본의 사회 정치 문화적 유산을 비판적으로 검색하는 가운데 토박이 문화의 민중 생활사적 의미를 탐색하는 한편, 유신 정권의 노동자 농민을 비롯한 도시 서민의 희생을 왜곡된 방식으로 정당화하고 자기기만책인 민족주의적 자긍심을 강요하는 산업전사의 정체성 정치에 딴지를 걸었다.
발행인 한창기는 편집위원 외에 편집부와 미술부, 광고기획, 행정관리, 사업관리, 특수사업, 판매지원 등을 두어 잡지 발행에 따른 업무 분담의 전문성과 효율성을 기하고자 했다. 르네상스적 지식인으로서 다방면에 걸친 탁월한 능력과 기획력을 『뿌리깊은 나무』에 구현하여 화려하고 고급스러운 장정과 볼거리가 풍부하고 읽을거리가 다양한 기사들을 실었다. 또한, ‘우리말과 그 짜임새를 되살려 새로운 시대에 알맞은 말로 발전’시키고자 애를 썼고, 발전과 현대화의 물결에 휩쓸리지 않으면서도 시류를 바로 잡아 올바른 삶의 방향과 문화적 비전을 제시하고자 노력했다. 그 단단한 뿌리를 ‘토박이 문화’와 역사적 연속성을 매개하는 주체로서 ‘민중’을 설정하여 정치와 경제, 사회 전반을 선도적으로 이끄는 문화적 전위지 역할을 떠맡았다.
문제는 ‘토박이’와 ‘민중’의 합목적적 연관성을 실질화하는 문화교양잡지로서의 『뿌리깊은 나무』의 매체적 지향이 얼마나 현실적으로 반향을 일으키고 민족문화운동의 발전에 기여했는가이다. ‘토박이’와 ‘민중’, 그 사이를 관류․포괄하는 대중이 놓이는 조감자로서의 지식인의 주체 위치와 실천의 논리를 묻는 것, 이 연구의 문제의식은 거기에 있다. 1980년 신군부의 언론통제로 폐간할 수밖에 없었던 『뿌리깊은 나무』의 의미와 한계는 한국적 특수성의 댄디적 태도와 교양의 비극적 역사성에 닿아 있다. 한창기와 『뿌리깊은 나무』의 편집위원, 그리고 이 잡지에 직간접으로 연루된 잡지 주체와 독자들을 함께 고려해 볼 때, 미디어를 부수고 현실을 재구성하는 대중에 대한 전적인 몰입에 경계를 둔 어떤 역사적 패착 요인이 아니었을까 생각하는 것이다.

영어초록

"Purikippennamu(Deep-rooted Tree)" occupies a unique position in the cultural landscape of the 1970s, which is represented by "(Changjakwabipyeong(creation and criticism)" and "Munhakwajiseong(literature and intelligence)." As a target of their main cultural politics, the violent series of political oppression at the end of the Yushin regime and the uncontrollable room of popular culture are the target of their main cultural politics. In detail, they search critically for social, political and cultural heritage of colonial Japan, And the identity politics of the industrial warrior who justified the sacrifice of the urban peasants including the workers' peasants of the Yushin regime in a distorted way and forced the nationalist pride of self-deceit.
In addition to the editorial committee, the publisher, Han Chang-ki, tried to enhance the professionalism and efficiency of the division of work by issuing magazines, including editorial and artistic departments, advertising planning, administrative management, business management, special projects and sales support. As a Renaissance intellectual, he embarked on a wide range of outstanding abilities and planning powers in a "Purikippennamu(deeply rooted tree)," and published various articles with a variety of colorful and luxurious fountainheads, attractions, and readings. In addition, I tried to revive Korean language and its texture and develop it into a word appropriate for a new age. I tried to correct the current situation and present the right direction of life and cultural vision without being influenced by the wave of development and modernization. He set the solid root as the 'Tobakii(native) culture' and the 'people' as the medium that mediates the historical continuity and assumed the role of cultural leader leading the politics, economy and society as a whole.
The point is how much the media orientation of the "Purikippennamu (deep- rooted tree)" as a cultural literary magazine that realizes the intrinsic relevance of "native" and "people" has contributed to the development of national cultural movement. There is a consciousness of the problem of this research, asking about the logic of "subjectivist" and "people", the subject of intellectuals as the constituent of the public, and the logic of the practice. The meaning and limit of the "Purikippennamu(deep-rooted tree)", which was forced to be closed down by the press control of the new military unit in 1980, touches the Dandy attitude of Korean specificity and the tragic history of education. Considering the early days, the editorial board of the "Purikippennamu(Deep-rooted Tree)", and the magazine subjects and readers involved directly or indirectly with this magazine, there is no historical attachment to the massive immersion of the masses who break down the media and rebuild the reality I think it is.
