프타호텝의 교훈과 잠언 간의 신학적, 사회적 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Teachings of Ptahhotep and the Book of Proverbs)

초록

이 글은 이집트의 지혜서 중 가장 오래된 책인 프타호텝의 교훈집과 잠언을 비교한 연구이다. 프타호텝은 아들(혹은 제자들)에게 자신의 지혜를 전수하기 위하여 교훈집을 작성하였다.그리고 잠언 또한 지혜자들이 후대에 지혜를 전하기 위해 작성한 책이다.
프타호텝의 교훈집은 이집트 고왕조 시대부터 신왕조 시대에 이르기까지 오랜 기간 이집트의 관리들을 가르치기 위하여 읽혔다. 잠언의 집필 시기가 분명치 않기 때문에 폭넓은 기간 전해 내려온 프타호텝의 교훈과 잠언을 비교 연구하며 두 문화권 사이의 공통점과 차이점을 연구하는 것은 의미가 있을 것이다.
특히 두 지혜 문헌을 통하여 두 문화권의 신학적 관점과 사회적 관점의 차이를 밝혀 볼 것이다. 그러기 위해서 먼저 프타호텝이 어떤 책인지 소개하고 그 내용을 신학적, 사회적으로 분류하였다. 분류된 내용을 토대로 잠언과 평행구절로 보이는 본문을 뽑아 비교해보았다.
그 결과 프타호텝의 교훈은 먼저 신학적 관점으로 볼 때, 비록 본문에 신에 관한 언급은 없지만 마아트를 깨달음으로 신의 질서에 순응해야 함을 교훈한다. 또한 올바르고 적절하게 행동한다면 모두 잘 될 것이라는 신학적 배경을 두고 기록되었음을 볼 수 있었다. 그리고 사회적 관점에서 볼 때 프타호텝의 교훈은 깨닫게 된 마아트를 유지함으로써 사회 질서를 지키고 순응하는 방법을 찾고자 한다.
잠언은 여호와 경외사상이 바탕이 된다. 잠언에서 하나님의 고유 이름인 ‘여호와’를 사용함으로 하나님의 역할이 강조되고 있다. 여호와라는 이름은 하나님이 이스라엘 백성과 언약을 맺으실 때 사용한 이름으로 하나님의 자기 계시의 의미를 담고 있다. 즉 잠언에서는 이스라엘의 신앙 전통에 대한 직접적인 언급은 없지만 여호와 이름을 사용하였다는 것은 잠언안에 이스라엘의 신앙 전승이 담겨져 있음을 의미한다. 또한 잠언에서 다루고 있는 지혜들은 이스라엘이 신명기의 말씀에서 들은 것이다. 즉 토라의 말씀이 실제의 삶으로 이어졌고 그것이 지혜가 되었음을 알 수 있다. 잠언은 사회 속에서 이렇게 깨달은 지혜로 하나님의 토라를 실현하는 것이 참된 지혜라고 교훈한다.

영어초록

This study purses to compare the teachings of Ptahhotep, the oldest book of Egyptian wisdom with the book of proverbs of the Bible in the areas of theological and social instructions. It is assumed that Ptahhotep wrote the teachings to inherit his wisdom to his son (or disciples). It is well known that the book of Proverbs is written by a king Solomon to convey his wisdom to his future generation.
The teachings of Ptahhotep was used to teach Egyptian officials for a long time from the Old Kingdom to the New Kingdom. Since the book of Proverbs is common with the teachings of Ptahhotep in genre, it will be meaningful to analyze the similarities and differences between the two cultures by comparing the book of Proverbs with the teachings of Ptahhotep, and reveal the significance of the similarities and differences between two wisdom teachings.
In the analytic comparison, to demonstrate the similarities and differences between the theological and social perspectives of the two cultures, firstly I outline what kind of book Ptahhotep is, and secondly classify the contents with focusing on the theological and social instructions. Based on the classified contents, thirdly parallel instructions of each text are selected and compared. Finally I demonstrate the significance of the similarities and differences.
As a result, the teachings of Ptahhotep tells that although there is no mention of God in the text, it is emphasized that the readers should be enlightened by Maʿat and their lives be conformed to the order of God through Maʿat. In addition, it is noted well that it was instructed with the theological background that everything would be fine if they acted correctly and appropriately. And from a social point of view, The teachings of Ptahhotep try to find a way to protect and conform to social order by maintaining the Maʿat that has been realized.
The main motto of book of Proverbs is the fear of the YHWH. The role of God is emphasized by using frequent use of YHWH, God’s unique name, in the Proverbs, YHWH is the name that God used to make a covenant with the people of Israel denoting God’s self-revelation. Though there is no direct mention of Israel’s religious tradition in the book of Proverbs, the frequent use of YHWH shows that Israel’s faith is transmitted in the book of Proverbs. It is noteworthy that the instructions dealt with in the book of Proverbs are what Israel heard in the words of Deuteronomy. It is alluded that Torah’s words lead Israel people to realistic lives and they become wisdom. In that sense, it is concluded that the book of Proverbs differs from the teachings of Ptahhotep.
