요하네스 이텐의 디자인교육 이념과 구성체계 (Ideals and Systems of Design Education of Johannes Itten)

초록

본 연구는 디지털 테크놀로지가 주도하는 급격한 사회구조의 변화로 인한, 다양한 사회적 요구에 부합하는 디자인교육 체계를 모색하는 일환으로, 산업화라고 하는 새로운 시대적 변화에 부합하는 디자인교육 체계를 제시하여, 오늘날 디자인 교육에 큰 영향을 끼친 요하네스 이텐이 추구했던 교육 이념과 교육 구성체계에 대한 특징을 검토하였다. 논고에 있어서는, 이텐의 교육이념은 바우하우스 재직 시에 관련한 저서와 관련문헌을, 교육 구성체계는 지금까지 이텐에 관한 연구가 주로 색채론에 집중되었음에 주목하고, 이텐의 교육론 중에서 색채를 제외한 형태와 구성, 재료와 재질, 사고와 표현을 중심으로 살펴보았다.
요하네스 이텐의 교육이념에서는, 집중적인 주입식 교육을 토대로 하던 아카데미적 전통 교육관에서 벗어나, 학생 주체의 창조성 계발이라는 교육을 표방하며 학생의 소질과 재능을 발전시키기 위한 자연주의적인 교육을 지향하는 특징이 엿 보였다. 교육 구성체계에서도 학생 주체라는 교육적 특징은 잘 나타나 있었다. 형태와 구성교육은 형태의 성질과 특징에 대한 분석, 그리고 통일이나 조화와 같은 조형언어의 이해를 토대로 학생들의 형태와 구성에 대한 감각을 발전시켜가는 특징이 있었다. 재료와 재질 교육에서는 다종다양한 재료에 내재하는 여러 가지 성질의 분석을 토대로, 이것들을 조화롭고 균형있게 조합하고 구성하는 과정을 반복하여, 분석력과 구성력을 발전시켜 나가는 특징이 엿 보였다. 사고와 표현 교육은 사고와 표현활동을 3가지 유형으로 분류하고, 이를 토대로 학생들 각자가 자신의 소질과 능력을 진단하고 보완점을 모색해서, 자신의 사고력과 표현력을 발전시켜 나가는 특징이 있었다.

영어초록

In order to search for a design education system that would correspond to various social needs caused by a new social structure also known as the digital technology-based information era, the study proposed a design education system that deals with new changes in the times called industrialization looking into educational ideals and education organizing system that Johannes Itten had pursued, who was the greatest contribution to the design education of today. For Itten's educational ideals, the study referred to relevant references and other publications as well that Itten wrote as a teacher at Bauhaus. Having noticed that Itten had worked mostly on colors, the study discussed the education organizing system focusing on forms, components, materials, textures, thinking and expressions in Itten's education theory with colors excluded.
For the educational ideals by Johannes Itten, the conventional academic education view focusing on intensive teaching by rote was rejected and, some natural teaching originated from a learner-centered creativity development was adopted to help learners improve their talents and abilities. The educational characteristic, the learner-centered teaching, was also found in the education organizing system. Forms and component education was appeared to support the learners to grow their nature with forms and components while that education helps the learners to analyze properties and characteristics of forms and also to understand formative terms as unification and harmony. In terms of material and texture education, it was determined to develop the learners' analytical skills and organizing ability by encouraging them to repeatedly coordinate and design many different characteristics of various materials both in harmony and balance. For thinking and expression education, thinking and expression activities were categorized into three types and based on those types, the learners were helped to diagnose their talents and abilities as making up for any shortcomings. That way, the learners would eventually come to improve their abilities to think and express.
