테리 이글턴의 “무신론 비판”에 대한 신학적 평가 (A Theological Evaluation of Eagleton’s Criticism of Atheism)

초록

탈근대사회 들어서서 신무신론자들의 등장에 따른 신학적 대응이 요구되는 때에 마르크스주의 문학 비평학자인 테리 이글턴의 “무신론 비판”이 학문적 주목을 끌었다. 이에 본 연구는 예일대학교의 테리 강연으로 소개된 이글턴의 “무신론 비판”에 대한 신학적 평가를 시도하였다. 이글턴은 현대 자유주의적 합리주의자들의 무분별한 기독교 비판을 환원주의적 관점으로 치부하면서 세 가지 논법으로 무신론자들을 비판한다. 그 세 가지 논법은 각각 자유주의적 인본주의 비판, 낙관적 인간 이해와 진보주의 비판, 이성과 신앙의 이분법 비판으로 정리된다. 이글턴은 이 세 가지 논법을 토대로 계몽주의 이후에 등장한 자유주의, 합리주의, 인본주의, 세속적 과학주의와 자본주의가 인류 해방을 위한 진정한 희망의 원리가 아님을 지적함으로써 무신론적 사유를 반박한다. 대신에 타락한 이성으로부터의 해방을 통한 하나님 나라의 실현을 희망의 원리로 추구하는 기독교 신앙이 훨씬 더 가치가 있음을 입증한다. 이런 이글턴의 무신론 비판 논법에는 몇 가지 신학적 성찰을 요청하는 요소가 있다. 그의 기독교 옹호는 신학적 정통에 대한 주관적 이해와 기독교와 마르크스주의의 연대를 추구하는 신학적 과제가 있다. 아울러 이해를 추구하는 믿음에 기초한 자연신학적 테제의 한계를 공유하고 있다. 이런 신학적 과제에도 불구하고 그의 무신론 비판 논법은 탈근대 시대에 기독교 옹호의 한 지성적 담론으로 제시되고 있다.

영어초록

This paper aims to evaluate the Eagleton’s criticism of new atheism from the theological perspective. Because he is a well-known Marxist as well as a modern literary critic, his criticism of atheism has attracted much attention. Accordingly, it is necessary for Christian theology to evaluate his argument for criticism of atheism. Eagleton has criticized the atheists with three reasonings, such as the criticism of liberal humanism, criticism of the optimistic understanding of human and progressive thinking, criticism of the dichotomy between reason and faith. Based on these three reasonings, Eagleton points out that the atheists have wrong reasoning. Liberal Humanism, including liberalism, rationalism, humanism, secular scientism, and modern capitalism, has had no solution about the contemporary social problems. The humanism which is the ideological foundation of atheists did not work on the principle of hope for the liberation of human society. On the other hand, Christian faith has more ideological value than secular humanism, since the Christianity is seeking the kingdom of God as a principle of hope.
Eagleton’s critical theory of atheism is developed in the context of the Christian advocacy. However, his theory is causing the post-modern discourse. Eagleton’s understanding of Christian theology has provided controversy for theological orthodoxy. His position of Orthodox theology is different from general Christian theology. In addition, Eagleton is pursuing a romance between Christianity and Marxism. It is required to reflect theologically on the essential difference between the two. He also has a premise of the natural theology in order to prove God’s exist. It is another theological issue. We know that the natural theology, that is, faith seeking understanding has both possibilities and limitations. Nevertheless, he has expanded his argument into the post-modern thought about philosophical axiology.
Eagleton’s criticism of atheism is worth considering in the area of Christian theology, because it creates an intellectual discourse to defend the Christian faith in a post-modern society. Despite of these benefits, its availability should be carefully evaluated in the sense that some of the theological evaluation has been requested according to this study.
