무당굿에 나타난 고혼 위무의 보편성과 특징 －수륙재․감로탱․여제와의 비교를 중심으로－ (The Universality and Characteristics of Pacifying Lonely Spirits in Mudang Gut －Centering on the Comparison with Suryukjae, Gamrodo, and Yeoje－)

초록

고혼 또는 원혼을 위로하고 달래는 것은 한국 무속의 오래된 전통이다. 전국적으로 관련 의례들이 다양하게 전승되고 있다. 한편 고혼 위무는 무속만이 아니라 불교 수륙재의 주제이기도 하다. 더불어 감로탱화에도 고혼 형상이 등장하며, 조선시대 국가제사였던 여제의 주된 대상이기도 했다. 이런 점을 고려하여 무당굿과 수륙재․감로탱․여제에 나오는 고혼의 유사성을 검토하고, 무당굿에 나타난 고혼 형상화 방식의 특징을 살펴보려고 한다. 이를 통해 무당굿에 나타난 원혼 위무의 보편성과 특징을 파악할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
무당굿, 수륙재․감로탱화, 여제는 서로 다른 종교 전통인데도 전체적으로 유사한 부분이 많다. 이것으로 본다면 원혼 위무의 전통은 특정 종교나 신앙이 아닌, 동양 종교 전통이 지닌 보편성이라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 각각이 수행하는 사회적 기능이 다르므로 대상화하는 고혼들의 종류가 같지 않다. 여제의 경우 고혼의 범주가 상대적으로 제한돼 있다. 무당굿과 수륙재․감로탱화는 일치하는 항목이 많은 편인데 특히 여제에 없는 ‘일상․생업’의 고혼들에서 유사성이 있다. 그리고 수륙재․감로탱화에 왕이나 문무관료 등이 등장하는 것은 조선시대 자료라는 점과 관련이 있고, 귀천․빈부를 망라한 무차평등회를 지향하는 수륙재의 이념이 반영된 결과라고 해석할 수 있다.
비교 대상에 따라 고혼의 형상화와 그 위무 방식이 다르게 나타난다. 수륙재에서는 무차평등회의 고혼으로 소청(召請)되며, 감로탱화에서는 구체적인 행색이 회화적으로 묘사되며, 여제에서는 통치자의 구휼 대상으로 호명된다. 무당굿은 이름 나열식과 연극적으로 재현하는 방식이 있는데 특히 후자가 특징적이다. 무당굿에서 고혼들은 각 에피소드의 주인공으로 등장한다. 무당이 재현한 연극 속에서 잡귀잡신들은 스스로 불우한 처지를 말하고 객관화하는 과정을 거친다. 여기에서 보이는 ‘스스로 말하기’는 요즘 자주 거론되는 예술치유 방식과 유사하다는 점에서 관심을 모은다. 이처럼 무당굿에서는 고혼들의 처지를 연극적으로 재현하고 입체적으로 형상화한다. 무당굿에 나타난 고혼 위무 방식의 특징이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The pacification of the lonely spirit or revengeful spirit is an old tradition of shamanism. There are related rituals that are transmitted in various manners nationwide. On the other hand, the pacification of lonely spirits is not only a shamanistic act but also the subject of Suryukjae. In addition, in nectar ritual paintings, there is a form of lonely spirits, and it was the main subject of Yeoje which was the national ancestral rites in the Joseon Dynasty. In consideration of such circumstances, the similarity in the form of lonely spirits in mudang gut, Suryukjae, nectar ritual painting, and Yeoje has been reviewed and their characteristics will be been examined through the method of formalizing lonely spirits in mudang gut. From this, it is expected that the universality and the characteristics of pacifying lonely spirits in mudang gut will be understood.
Mudang gut, Suryukjae, nectar ritual painting, and Yeoje are different religious traditions which share a lot in common. From this, the tradition of soothing lonely spirits are not from a specific religion or faith, but it is a universality of the Eastern religious traditions. However, the social function each performs is different so the categories and the types of lonely spirits they objectify differ. In the case of Yeoje, the category of lonely spirits is restricted relatively. Mudang gut, Suryukjae, and nectar religious painting have a lot in common. Of particular, they share ‘everyday life․occupation’ of lonely spirits, which is not included in Yeoje. The fact that kings and civil and military officials appear in Suryukjae and nectar religious painting is related to the Joseon Dynasty and it is the result of reflecting the faith of Suryukjae which aspires the egalitarianism that accepts high and low and the rich and poor alike.
According to the religious tradition, there is a difference in the formalization of lonely spirits and the soothing. In Suryukjae, it is summoned as lonely spirits of egalitarianism, and in nectar religious painting, it is pictorially depicted, while in Yeoje, it is called upon as the aid object of the ruler. In mudang gut, there are calling style and reenacting style, of which the latter is of particular interest. In mudang gut, lonely spirits appear as the main character of each episode. In the drama reenacted by a shaman, the spirits talk about their misfortune and they undergo the process of objectification. The ‘self-uttering’ is similar to the contemporary art therapy, which calls for interest. As such, in mudang gut, the position of lonely spirits are histrionically reenacted and formalized in multi-dimension. It is the characteristic of pacifying lonely spirits in mudang gut.
