초록

Pagoda(Tapgol) Park was the heart of Korea in that it was geographically located in the center of Seoul between Namsan and Bukak. Throughout its long history, Koreans have cherished Pagoda Park, located in Jongno-gu, Seoul, as an area where the national spirit and spirit of independence are alive in pre-modern and modern times.
Pagoda Park began construction in 1899 and must have been completed in the second half of 1905. The construction of Pagoda Park was first able to prevent the Japanese from taking possession of the Ten-story Stone Pagoda at Wongaksa Temple Site and to preserve the stone pagoda from damage. Second, Gojong wanted to transform Seoul into a modernized city, and as part of that, he created the Pagoda area, the imperial park, into a park. Above all, in 1899, King Gojong issued an order directing the construction of Pagoda Park, and J.M. Brown, the customs general tax accountant, took the lead in carrying out the construction of Pagoda Park.
Pagoda Park was transformed into a symbol of Seoul and a center of assembly, commerce, and culture. Pagoda Park was used for various functions such as a place for anti-Japanese rallies, a monument to people who resisted the Japan-Korea Treaty, a space for markets, concerts for the public, and a tourist attraction for foreigners. At that time, Westerners also visited Pagoda Park when they came to Seoul, and among them, the prince of a German, a former U.S. vice president, and a British field marshal included a visit to Pagoda Park in their official itineraries among Seoul’s famous attractions.
