초록

황석영의 『오래된 정원』은 작가의 자전적 성격을 포함하기는 하지만 그 내용을 상당 수준 변용하여 창작한 결과물로서 작가가 리얼리즘적 태도 못지않게 소설의 형식에도 많은 공을 들인 작품이다. 따라서 이 작품이 갖는 내용과 형식의 긴밀한 상관성을 주목하되, 그 둘의 매개와 통합을 가능하게 하는 주인공의 특정 행위와 그 의의, 작품 전체의 서사적 형식화에 담긴 논리와 가치, 그리고 그에 바탕하여 이 작품이 궁극적으로 도달하게 되는 주체성의 의미를 분석할 필요가 있다.
우선 주인공 오현우가 또 다른 주인공 한윤희가 남긴 편지와 노트를 읽는 것이 이 작품의 주요 내용이자 형식이다. 사실상 하나라고 할 수 있는 이 두 인물은 분화된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 두 인물은 편지나 글을 통해 시공간의 간극을 극복하며 대화적으로 교섭한다. 이 소통 현상에 임하는 주체 간 마음의 밀도가 중요한데, 그것을 진정성의 논리로 해석해볼 수 있다. 진정성은 내면성에 기반한 근대적 개인의 윤리를 의미하는 개념인데, 이 작품에서 특기할 만한 점은 그 진정성의 윤리를 넘어서고자 하는 열정이 가득하다는 것이다. 그리하여 한윤희가 남긴 편지와 노트를 통해 진행되는 무조건적인 환대의 소통, 다시 말해 탈진정성의 소통이 이 작품을 가득 채운다. 다음으로는 주제와 형식의 긴밀한 상관성인데, 출감 이후 행보로 시작되는 이 작품의 서사는 바로 오현우가 새로운 시대에 걸맞은 형태의 ‘사회인’ 되기를 위해 거쳐야 하는 타자성의 만남과 소통으로 점철되어 있다. 그 사회인 되기의 정신적 귀착지는 이 작품에서 처음과 끝에서 결국 ‘집’으로 표상되고 있다. 이 문제를 효과적으로 형상화하기 위해 이 작품은 ‘나(자아)’, ‘너(타자)’, 그리고 ‘우리(사회)’로 이어지도록 서사 전개를 단계화하고 있다. 이는 내용이 곧 형식과 조화롭게 맞물리는 형국이라 평가할 수 있다.
이 작품에 나타난 이러한 주체 탐색의 여정은 궁극적으로 다시 갈뫼의 ‘우리집’으로 상징되는 더욱 성숙한 자기 자신으로 귀환하여 종합된다. 이는 타자의 매개를 통한 성찰의 결과가 주체의 해방으로 이어지는 결과를 낳는다. 결국 이 작품에서 주인공 오현우가 한윤희와의 소통을 통해 도달한 주체의 모습은 자기 성찰과 자기 해방이 맞물리며 하나되는 경지를 이룩한다. 이는 궁극적으로 이 작품에 나타난 주체 모색의 도정이 정치윤리학적 의미를 가질 수 있는 중요한 근거이다.

영어초록

Hwang Seok-young’s novel The Old Garden includes the author’s autobiographical characters, but it is the result of a considerable level of transformation of the content that the artist has put much efforts into the form of the novel, in addition to the realism attitude. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the close correlation between the content and form of this work. And it is necessary to analyze the specific action and its significance that enables the mediation and integration of the two, and the logic and values contained in the narrative formalization of this work, and the meaning of the subjectivity that this work ultimately reaches.
First of all, the main content and format of this work is a main character Oh Hyun-woo’s reading of letters and notes left by another main character Han Yoon-hee. In fact, these two characters can be seen as differentiated from one character. Two characters overcome the gap between time and space through writing and reading letters. The density of minds between subjects in this communication which can be interpreted as the logic of authenticity is important. Authenticity means modern individual ethics based on inner mind. In this work it is full of passion to go beyond the ethics of authenticity. Thus, the unconditional communication of hospitality, in other words, communication of de-authenticity through letters and notes left by Han Yoon-hee, fills this work. Next importance is the close correlation between subject and form. The narrative of this work, which begins after release, is marked by the encounter and communication of otherness that Oh Hyun-woo has to go through to become a suitable ‘social person’ for the new era. The spiritual place of becoming a member of society is eventually represented as a ‘house(home)’ at the beginning and the end of this work. In order to effectively embody this goal, this work structuralizes the narrative development to lead to ‘I (self)’, ‘You (other)’ and ‘We (society)’. This can be evaluated the achievement that the content is harmoniously interlocked with the form.
In this work, the journey of searching for the subject ultimately returns to a more mature self symbolized by ‘Galmoe’’s ‘My House(Home)’ and is synthesized. This results in the liberation of the subject by reflection through the mediation of other. In the end, the main character’s subject arrived at the integration of self-reflection and self-liberation in this work. Ultimately, this is an important ground for pursuing subject to have political and ethical significance in this work.
