탈식민주의 담론을 통한 소설 읽기 교육의 의미 연구 - 최인훈 소설을 중심으로 - (A study on the Meaning of Novel Reading Education through Postcolonial Discourse - Focusing on Choi In-hoon’s novel -)

초록

본 연구는 최인훈 소설에 나타난 탈식민주의적 사유와 이를 둘러싼 담론의 문학교육적차원에서의 비판적 읽기 가능성을 검토하고 있다. 소설(문학)을 읽고 해석하고 교육하는과정에서의 잠재적 식민성이 갖는 실제적 위협이 상존한다는 관점에 비춰, 다문화시대 탈식민주의 문학교육의 실천적 과제를 수행하는 작업이 절실하다.
최인훈 소설은 탈식민주의의 담론적 특성을 정확하게 보여준다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 인종과 문화, 정체성 같은 전통적 식민주의 담론의 중심 주제를 전면화할 뿐만 아니라, 어떠한 의도에서든 무시되거나 주변화되는 식민주체의 실상을 알리고 이른바 균질화된 자본주의화라는 이름으로 지워지고 때론 강화되는 식민성과 그 잔재에 대한 충실한 탐색이이루어진다.
『서유기』에 나타난 근대적 주체의 시민 의식과 자기 주체에 대한 식민주의적 글쓰기의한계를 지적한 방식이나 『크리스마스 캐럴』, 『태풍』에서 보여준 식민성에 대한 의식적 수용과 모방, 거부의 다양한 양태들은 결국 한국 사회 식민주의의 현재 모습을 보여준다. 풍자와 아이러니 같은 탈식민주의적 글쓰기 전략에 대한 이해를 통해 문학교육에서 문학텍스트의 정치성이나 사회성의 맥락을 이해할 수 있는 계기를 마련할 수도 있다.
문학교육은 탈식민주의 담론의 이론적 틀을 이해하는 것과 함께 진행되어야 한다. 동시대를 살아가며 역사적 사건을 해석하는 다양한 시각의 존재 가능성을 인정한다면 최인훈소설의 탈식민성에 대한 분석 또한 다양하게 분화할 수 있다는 점을 인식할 수 있다. 본논문을 통해 최인훈 소설이 서구 중심적인 근대 인식에 대한 근본적 문제 제기와 탈식민주의적 방향을 모색하는 중요한 이정표로 기능하고 있음을 확인하게 된다.

영어초록

This study examines the possibility of the critical reading of the post-colonial thought and discourse surrounding it in Choi In-hoon’s novels in literary education. Considering the real threat of potential colonialism in the process of reading, interpreting, and educating novels (literature), it is considered necessary to carry out practical tasks for post-colonial literature education in the multicultural era.
Choi In-hoon’s novels are noteworthy in that they accurately show the discourse characteristics of post-colonialism. Not only does the central theme of traditional colonialist discourse such as race, culture, and identity come to the fore, but it also informs the reality of the colonial subject that is ignored or marginalized for any purpose, and in the name of so-called homogenized capitalism, the coloniality and its remnants that are erased and sometimes strengthened. A thorough search for various modes of conscious acceptance, imitation, and the rejection of colonialism shown in “A Christmas Carol” and “Typhoon,” as well as the method of pointing out the limitations of colonial writing on the modern subject’s civic consciousness and self-subject in ”Journey to the West,” shows the present state of colonialism. Moreover, understanding postcolonial writing strategies such as satire and irony can provide an opportunity to understand the context of the political or social nature of literary texts in literature education.
Ultimately, literary education should proceed along with understanding the theoretical framework of the post-colonial discourse. If we acknowledge the possibility of the existence of various perspectives that interpret historical events while living in the same era, we recognize that the analysis of the demineralization of Choi In-hoon’s novels can also be differentiated in various ways. This will serve as an opportunity to confirm that Choi In-hoon’s novel can be an important milestone in seeking a post-colonial direction in that it raises a fundamental problem with the Western-centered modern perception.
