초록

The thought of the non-Western thinker Frantz Fanon has been accepted and appropriated in Western contemporary theories including postcolonialism and cultural studies. But the study of Fanon’s thought in a variety of different fields has a tendency that puts stress on psychological and cultural decolonization to the exclusion of political-economic decolonization. This recent tendency results in distorting the heart of Fanon’s thought. That is, it removes Fanon’s consideration of political-economic realities and emphasis on anticolonial struggle from his thought. It turns Fanon’s thought into the intellectual commodity circulated among the Western academy.
In this respect, this paper aims to examine the kernel of Fanon’s thought from the standpoint of his critique of eurocentrism in order to inquire into the problem of the distorted appropriation of his thought. This paper concretely shows his critical view of colonialism, racism, humanism, and nationalism as eurocentric discourse systems connected to the colonial dominance over non-Western world by Western Powers, in his Black Skin, White Masks, and The Wretched of the Earth.
Through this examination, this article reveals the true sense of Fanon’s thought, and seeks a possibility of giving Fanon studies more practical and critical viewpoint under the present circumstances that the evolved versions of eurocentrism are everywhere from the individual domains to worldwide structures.
