이청준 소설 「선고유예」의 탈근대성 (Postmodernism of Cheongjun LEE's “Probation”)

초록

본고는 이청준의 소설 「선고유예(宣告猶豫)」의 탈근대성과 새로운 리얼리즘의 가능성을 고찰한 것이다.
이 소설은 상업문화의 축도를 무대화한 행위극과 우화를 제시하면서 글쓰기가 불가능한 시대를 정면 돌파하는 작가-되기와, 최후진술 형식의 소설쓰기를 극화한 작품이다.
서슬자 이준은 신세대의 무관심과 외면으로 몰락해가는 정론지 ≪내외≫의 도저한 분위기에 견디지 못하고 사표를 낸다. 그다음 옮겨온 ≪새여성≫사에서도 그는 상업문화의 천박한 분위기에 적응하지 못한다. 그리하여 사표를 내고 그것이 수리되기까지 그는 열흘간의 유예 휴가를 얻어 유수의 여자대학 근처에 하숙을 든다. 이 여자대학 일대는 외국어 간판이 즐비한 상업문화의 성지(盛地)이다. 이준의 쑥스러움은 이 이 상업문화의 천박성과 물질화되는 인간과 그 의식의 이질성에 대한 이준의 자의식이다.
이준이 받은 열흘의 휴가는 그의 환상 속에 나타나는 전짓불 뒤의 심문관에게 사형을 선고받고 자기진술 형식의 최후진술을 해야 할 기간이다. 이 최후진술은 그가 믿는 가장 진실한 소설의 형식이다. 그러나 그는 소설을 쓸 수 없다. 그것은 모든 것을 ‘재미있다/재미없다’로 말하는 다방 ‘세느족’ 신세대들에게는 미친 짓일 뿐이다. 재미만을 찾는 그들 관심의 지향은 ‘세느’의 공동 낙서장의 언어가 표방하듯 상업문화의 에로스, 성희(性戱)이다.
상업문화는 모든 인간적 가치를 획일화하는 가치무차별성을 초래한다. 이 몰가치의 상황에서 예술의 질적 가치는 무화되고 어떤 의미 생산도 불가능한 불모화를 낳는다. 이것이 소설쓰기를 불가능하게 하는 텍스트의 ‘사회․언어적 상황’이다. 그 상황의 알레고리가 시인 윤일과 실패한 가수 정은숙의 이야기이다. 그들의 예술은 소외되고, 그에 따라 무력해지는 삶은 떳떳하게 드러내놓고 사랑할 수도 없는 수치심 및 금기의식을 동반한다. 그리하여 사람들의 눈을 피해 은밀한 곳, 밤에만 이루어지는 그들의 사랑은 격렬한 자학과 가학의 파괴성을 노정한다. 그런 치욕스런 사랑을 윤일은 간통이라고 말한다. 결국 더 이상 삶을 지탱할 수 없게 된 정은숙은 자살하고, 윤일은 귀향한다. 두 사람의 파탄은 상업문화의 가치무차별성에 압살당하는 문학․예술의 몰락에 대한 우의이다. 이와 같이 인간을 패배와 좌절로 내모는 텍스트의 사회․언어적 상황은 이청준 소설의 창작적 모티브 혹은 텍스트생산의 거점이 된다. 이청준 소설학의 유력한 한 갈래는 이 패배의 미학에 기초해 있다.
인간을 파탄으로 내모는 몰가치의 불모성과 대결하는 방식이 ‘왕’의 단식이다. ‘왕’은 상업문화의 축도인 ‘세느’ 다방의 창가에, 신세대 여성들의 환시리(環視裏)에 오연히 앉아 헛구역질을 견디면서 여자의 나상들을 목각하고 있다. 그의 극적인 행위는 그들 언어에 대한 희화화이다. ‘왕’은 부동의 자세로 탁자 밑에서 목각을 하는 두 손의 은밀한 작업에 몰두한다. 그가 목각하는 나상은 그들 정신과 욕망의 물상이다. 그 물상들에는 그들 언어의 핵심이 고스란히 환치되어 있다. 그는 마침내 무지하고 우악스런 양물을 치기만만하게 쳐들고 있는 남자의 나상 조각을 완성한다. 그리고 그는 죽는다. 그 죽음은 그들 언어가 지향하는 욕망의 핵심에 도달한 풍자이다. 그것은 상업문화의 허무주의를 겨냥한 풍자극이다. ‘왕’의 단식은 가치 부재의 허기를 허기로 맞서 극복하고자 하는 방식이다. 그 허기는 이준의 어릴 적 굶주림의 기억에 뿌리박고 있다. 그것은 ‘4․19의 가능성’과 ‘5․16의 좌절’을 경험하면서 보편적 가치의 실재에 대한 환상으로 이행된다.
이 허기는 전짓불 뒤의 심문관에게 고백하는 자기진술의 중심 모티프를 이룬다. 전짓불이 일망 감시 체제의 상징이라면 심문관은 그 체제의 판관을 표상한다. 이러한 체제의 영토화를 내면화한 이준은 자기진술 욕망에 대한 허기가 강렬하면서도 자기검열 의식의 반작용에 부딪친다. 허기는 민주, 정의, 평등과 같은 보편적 가치의 실재에 대한 환상을 줄기차게 이끌어내는 자기진술욕의 동력으로 어떤 사회 문화적 코드나 영토로도 포획할 수 없는 탈영토화의 탈주선을 향한다. 이 불온한 탈주의 욕망에 내려진 선고가 사형이고, 10일간의 집행 유예기간에 행해지는 최후진술이 그의 소설이다. 소설은 이 욕망을 모태로 태어나는 끊임없는 탈주의 산물이다.
그의 최초의 단편 소설이 발표되자 심문관은 각하의 집행유예 명령을 하달한다. 그 유예 결정의 근거는 소설이 가장 성실하고 진실한 진술의 한 가지라는 것과 소설이라는 진술이 충분히 읽히고 해석될 때까지 형 집행이 연기되어야 한다는 이유들이다. 이것은 이청준의 실존적 작가의식을 극적으로 표현한 것이다. 작가는 소설을 쓰고 그것이 읽히는 동안 형 집행이 유예된 사형수와 같다는 인식을 극화하고 있기 때문이다. 이청준은 유언을 하듯 최후의 진술 형식으로 소설을 쓰고 이를 통해 자기구원의 해방과 자유를 추구했던 작가이다. 그것이 글쓰기가 불가능한 시대의 소설가-되기와 새로운 글쓰기의 가능성이다.
이러한 이청준의 소설은 한 세대 앞서 세기 전환기 이후의 현실을 상호텍스트성으로 선취한 예언적 담론이라 할 수 있다. 그것은 근대문학의 벽을 넘어야 할 새로운 세기의 문인들에게 선행적 지표가 될 수 있을 것이다. 그것은 자본 및 시장 권력의 전제에 짓눌리고 양극화의 극단에 내몰려 파탄을 면치 못하는 대다수 민중들의 삶을 텍스트 생산의 모태로 삼아 새로운 리얼리즘의 가능성을 모색할 하나의 대안이 될 것이다.

영어초록

This paper is a study on the problems presented in Cheongjun LEE's novel, “Probation(1969, The New Title; A Autobiography that isn't written)”
Leejun takes holiday for ten days from the first day when he tenders his resignation to a journal. The New Women Co., untill the tenth day when the company receives it. These ten days are the period that he should give his final statement to [an Interrogator, an agent of His Excellency] behind the strong flash, because he has been received a sentence of death by [the Interrogator] who comes out often in his illusion. Leejun lodges at a house near the coffee house ‘Seine’ in front of a prominent women's university in Korea as well as in world. The narrator describes an atmosphere of this street; ‘everything is awkward.’ The ‘Seine’ is an epitome of awkward atmosphere of this street and the awkwardness originates in fetish of shallow commercial culture, represented by The New Women Co. Since an exchange value replaces use value of everything to its quantity of money, the exchange value extinguishes qualitative differences of everything. The Seine's customers, young students of the women's university habitually classify everything into ‘interesting’ or ‘uninteresting’. Their words represent the relationship between the consumption culture and the indiscriminate words. Their indiscriminate words are a core of the novel that Leejun considers as a reason why he can't write novels. Then, how can he write novels in the times unable to write?
The first clue is two fables presented in this work; the fable of Wang's fasting, and the tale of poet Yoonil & a failed singer ‘Jeong Eunsook’. These fables are the phases of tragic lives they live in the times unable to product any means. The presentation of these lives is one of leading method to write. The nude figures of women Wang is carving are ‘Verdinglichung’, and the symbols of indiscriminateness that even human being are reduced to exchange value. Those symbols bring their words, ‘interesting or uninteresting’ in relief. Wang is motionless, but devotes himself to carve confidentiallywith his hands under the table. This confidential action suggests very meaningful parody. He makes a nude figure of a man with a very big penis standing upright. And then he died. There is a rumor he may be alive, but anyway his fictitious function comes to an end by accomplishing his action. He takes his revenge of killing himself on the girls by sending out their words to their nude figures. This revenge seems to be the same as a method that he tries to overcome or extinguish permanently his hunger due to absence of intrinsic value by his fasting. The tale of poet Yoonil & a failed singer Jeong Eunsook shows lively how powerless a qualitative value of art such as poem, music, and the like is in front of the logic of quantitative (exchange) value such as money. Since their worthless lives are too awkward and shameful, they love each other only in the confidential place and at nights. Moreover, the more they feel shame at their love, the more they used to enjoy passionate nights. So Yoonil says that their love is adultery. As a result, they can' maintain their lives, but Eunsook kills herself and Yoonil returns to his native birthplace in the long run.
The second clue of Lee Cheongjun's writing novels is to allegorically juxtpose the aspects of life suspended or frustrated by the quantitative logic like the fable of Wang's fasting, and the tale of poet Yoonil & a failed singer ‘Jeong Eunsook’ as describe above. Moreover he replaces the art performances represented in Wang's nude figure carving or in the tale of Yoonil & Jeong Eunsook into a writing novel and thereby dramatizes the writing novel itself. Like this, the way how to juxtapose the allegorical motifs and increase them as side branches is different from the technique of traditional novels.
The third clue can be found out from his first short story published in a literary journal. The theme of the short story is hero's hesitation in the choice of a bride between a pretty girl and a slemn girl. The hero has left his choice to the result of the two girls' desperate fight. As a result, he gets married with the pretty girl. This motif reflects also allegorically the current tendency that the girl with solemn and serious values loses in the contest.
The writing in the times that the literary journal publishing these fable stories are hardly sold is just an insanity in Seine girls' position like Wang's fasting that counters hungry with hungry. That is, they regard not only Wang's fasting but also writing novels as insane. But Leejun, i.e., Cheongjun's hunger becomes insanity, because he needs a very serious logic for himself-relief to overcome the hunger, so he has to be a novelist. The passion he has to be a novelist is an insanity followed by anxiety. His insanity is a spontaneous manifestation of his desire to be free from the bondage like uniforms, systems etc.
The form of what he has to write is the final statement, i.e., his novel. The novel in the form of himself-statement is connected with his relief. He informs the Interrogator that his first short story is published in a literary journal, and then the Interrogator transmits His Excellency's reprieve order to Leejun. The reasons of the reprieve are as follows: firstly, the novel is a kind of the most honest and truthful forms of self-statement; secondly, his punishment has to be reprieved so far as his novels can be read and interpreted sufficently by readers; and the like. Therefore, the fate of a novelist is like that of a man reprieved for a predetermined period.
Leejun's recognition of these facts comes into his existential consciousness as a novelist. I am sure Leejun's recognition made him to become a novelist. He is a novelist who writes every novel as if he left a will.
