초록

The reconsideration of the discourse of modernization and the rural/urban novel in the 1960~70's as a level of cultural study itself is meaningful, and can also contribute to the groping for a new direction of the study of Korean literature. In the approach of the cultural study, Raymond Williams' theory of culture, especially his concept of Keyword is very useful. He regards the research of the changes of historical, sociological meaning of the language as the core of the cultural study, and the very words that show the cultural changes in a society are the Keywords. In this Keywords we can find the historical, sociological struggle for the hegemony between the conflicting forces, and comparing the British situation that Raymond Williams describes with that of Korea, we can see better the reality of the struggle for the hegemony within the Korean discourse of modernization and the rural/urban novel in the 1960~70's. In the sense that this cultural study places the matter of language at its center, the meaning of the study of literature must be more emphasized, and when we inquire into the fundamental matter of literature surrounding the essence of literature, we can take the desirable direction for the cultural study of literature.
