On August 27, 1917, Kerensky, the head of the Russian Provisional Government, accused general Kornilov, the commander in chief of Russian army, of conspiracy against provisional government and relieved him of his post. In his turn, general Kornilov claimed that Kerensky's accusations were lies, and by disobeying that order, declared his rebellion in public. Most historians tend to regard the clash of two leaders who reached an agreement on collaboration just before, as the expression of their struggle for power. But it resulted from the difference in their political courses and power bases.
In the Kornilov affair, there were woven the elements of misunderstanding, conspiracy, and betrayal. We may take into account the role of Savinkov who "played an intricate game in order to secure the collaboration of Kerensky and Kornilov in the government, misleading each of the protagonists as to the other's real aims." Therefore, when naive L'vov delivered real, though a little exaggerated, intentions of general Kornilov, Kerensky gladly chose to break up with general Kornilov. In fact, general Kornilov ordered to move his reliable troops toward Petrograd before Savinkov asked him to do at the meetings in August 23-24, and aimed not only to do away with Soviets and Bolsheviks, but to purge government and establish dictatorship. And Kerensky and general Kornilov had little trust to each other and were at any time ready to betray each other.
