12~16세기 비잔틴 이콘화에 나타난 예수 그리스도 도상의 시각적 상징 표현 연구 - 판토크라토 이콘을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Visual Symbolic Language Expression of Byzantine Icon Painting since 12th to 16th centuries - Focused on the Icon of Pantocrator -)

초록

본 연구는 ‘형상을 통한 신학’이라고 불리는 이콘화가 교회의 가르침에 부합되고 형상을 통해서 왜곡되지 않도록 정통성을 계승하기 위해 노력해온 예수 초상의 시각적 상징 표현을 연구하고자 하였다. 이는 최근 들어 급증하고 있는 이콘 성화에 대한 관심이 왜곡되지 않은 이콘 형상을 인지하고 이해할 수 있도록 하고자 함이다. 이를 위하여 첫째, 비잔틴 이콘화의 정의와 기원을 살펴보고, 둘째, 비잔틴 이콘화가 현대인들에게 익숙한 다른 회화 형식의 성화와 차별되는 시각적 표현의 특징을 살펴보았다. 셋째로는 예수 그리스도 판토크라토의 의미와 시각적 상징 요소를 12~16세기 작품을 통해 그 표현을 분석해 보았다. 그 결과, 12~14세기 예수 그리스도 판토크라토 이콘화는 마케도니아 화파의 작품으로 구분되며 이는 그리스 헬레니즘 문명의 중심지와 사산 왕조의 페르시아 등과 밀접한 관계를 갖는 위치에서 로마적 지중해 문명과 융합되어 동방적 요소와 라틴적인 요소가 가미된 새로운 국면을 더한 형태로 전개되는 것이 큰 특징이었다. 이에 반해 15~16세기의 작품은 크레타 화파의 작품으로 15세기 이후 비잔틴 제국이 멸망하면서 점차 르네상스의 영향을 받아 사실적인 표현이 나타나기 시작하였다. 특히 16세기 작품에서 비잔틴 양식과 기법이 정착되면서 특유의 세련된 부드러움이 강조되는 특징이 있었다. 마케도니아 화파와 크레타 화파의 시각적 표현양식의 가장 큰 차이점은 인물의 피부 표현 색상과 빛의 양의 차이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 고대 이집트의 파윰 형식에서부터 시작된 판토크라토의 제작은 시대적 변천 과정에서 표현 기법이나 색조의 변화는 나타나고 있지만 사용되는 시각 상징은 변화되지 않았으며 추가되는 의미가 나타나고 있음을 확인하였다. 이 연구를 통하여 이콘 애호가들과 성화 작가들이 이콘화에 대한 올바른 인식과 시각 상징 의미를 인지하고 그 중요성을 잘 계승해 나갈 수 있기를 기대하며 향후 비잔틴 시대의 다른 성인들의 이콘 초상과 이야기 성화 구성의 특징 연구를 계속이어 나가고자 한다.

영어초록

This study aimed to study the visual symbolic expression of the portrait of Jesus, which has been striving to inherit legitimacy so that iconography, called "theology through shape," conforms to the teachings of the church and is not distorted through shape. This aims to recognize and understand the icon shape that has not been distorted by the recent surge in interest in iconization. To this end, first, the definition and characteristics of Byzantine iconography were examined, and second, the characteristics of visual expression that distinguished Byzantine iconography from other painting styles familiar to modern people were examined. Third, we analyzed the meaning and visual symbolic elements of Jesus Christ Pantocrato through works from the 12th to 16th centuries. As a result, the 12th and 14th centuries of Jesus Christ Pantocrato iconography is divided into the works of Macedonian school, which are closely related to the center of Greek Hellenistic civilization and Persia of the Sassanian Dynasty. On the other hand, works from the 15th to 16th centuries were represented by the Cretan School, and after the fall of the Byzantine Empire after the 15th century, realistic expressions began to appear under the influence of the Renaissance, and as Byzantine styles and techniques were established, their unique refined softness was emphasized. The biggest difference between the visual expression styles of the Macedonian and Cretan painters is the difference in the color of the person's skin expression and the amount of light. As a result, the Macedonian paintings expressed a splendid artistic sense on the Hellenistic tradition by expressing characters with a large amount of light by complementary contrast, while the Cretan paintings emphasized dramatic sacredness and solemnity by expressing characters with strong contrast of local lighting by similar color contrast. It confirmed that Pantokrato had been changed in expression techniques and colors century by century, but the visual symbols used were not changed and continued, and that there was some added meanings. Through this study, I hope that the Icon lovers and artists for the Icon will be able to recognize and inherit the correct perception and meaning of Byzantine Icon, and I would like to continue research on the characteristics of other portraits and compositions in the Byzantine era in the future.
