초록

이 연구는 알베르투스로부터 토마스 아퀴나스, 디트리히를 거쳐 에크하르트까지 13, 4세기 도미니코회 내의 가능지성의 가능성 개념의 변화에 주목하고자 한다. 이 시기의 도미니코회에서 알베르투스의 지성론은 토마스[주의]에 대한 비판적 태도를 가진 디트리히와 에크하르트에 의해 더욱 근본적이고 진보적인 방식으로 전개되어, 토마스주의와 함께 도미니코회의 지성론의 커다란 줄기를 형성하였다. 그렇기 때문에 13, 4세기 도미니코회의 가능지성론은 알베르투스주의와 토마스주의의 대립, 수용과 종합의 형태로 전개되었다. 토마스 아퀴나스는 능동지성보다 가능지성을 중심으로 사유하였고, 비록 초자연적 은총을 통해서 저 세상에서 지양되지만 자연본성에 따르는 가능지성의 가능성을 물체의 영역에 한정하였다. 능동지성을 중심으로 가능지성의 가능성을 사유한, 그래서 가능지성의 가능성을 능동지성에 의한 형상화의 가능성으로 파악한 알베르투스를 따라 디트리히는 능동지성의 역할을 최소화한 토마스에 반대하여 가능지성을 능동지성으로부터의 유출로서 설명한다. 이에 따라 가능지성의 가능성은 대상에 대한 능동성을 갖게 되며, 더 나아가 능동지성에 의한 가능지성의 형상화를 통해서 능동지성의 양태에 따르는 신 인식에 이르도록 그 가능성이 확장되게 된다. 에크하르트는 토마스처럼 능동지성보다 가능지성에 더 큰 관심을 두었고, 가능지성의 비어있음에서 신을 수용할 가능성을 발견한다. 가능지성은 모든 피조물을 벗어버림으로써, 심지어 자기 자신까지 비어버리고, 그럼으로써 그 안에서 오직 신만이 신 자신만이 활동하게 되도록, 신의 작용에 대해 전적으로 수동적이 될 수 있다.

영어초록

This study has as its objective to consider how the concept of the possibility of the ‘possible intellect’ had changed within the Dominican Order in the 13th and in the 14th century especially focusing on the thoughts of Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Dietrich of Freiberg and Meister Eckhart. The theory of intellect of which Albert the Great laid the foundation had been developed in a more radical and progressive way by Dietrich and Eckhart taking a critical view of Thomas Aquinas and, together with Thomas’ theory of intellect, formed two significant streams within the Dominican Order at that time. The theories of possible intellect within the Dominican Order therefore had been developed through their opposition, reciprocal reception and synthesis. While explaining the human intellect, Thomas Aquinas attributes more importance to the possible intellect than to the active intellect, the function of which he minimizes to abstraction, and also limits the ‘natural’ possibility of the possible intellect to the cognition of the essence of material beings, although this limitation could be broken through by the supernatural grace. Following Albert the Great who thinks of the possibility of the possible intellect in its order toward the active intellect as true-Self, and therefore as the possibility of its being completely informed through the active intellect, Dietrich criticizes Thomas Aquinas who minimized the role of the active intellect and considers the possible intellect as the emanation out of the active intellect. Emanated from the active intellect, the possible intellect becomes active toward its object and completely returns to its origin through fully being informed by the active intellect as its form and finally comes to know the first principle in the first principle according to the mode of the first principle. Eckhart is more interested in the possible intellect than in the active intellect like Thomas, but thinks that the possibility of the possible intellect ultimately lies in the capacity of God. Through the complete negation of every created, even of itself, the possible intellect becomes totally empty and passive so that it can transcend itself as creature and become capable of God and have God alone working in itself, now not as creature, but as God Himself.
