초록

<콘크리트 유토피아>는 원인 모를 대규모 지진 이후 포스트 아포칼립스 세계관속에서 방범대장 및 대중으로 전락한 황궁 아파트 주민들을 중심으로 전체주의 체제아래 공동체의 형성과 분열, 그리고 몰락이 이루어지는 과정을 다루고 있는 작품이다.
특히, 방범대장은 포스트 아포칼립스 이후 생존과 외부 세력의 침입 방지라는 최우선의 목표 달성을 위하여 황궁 아파트 주민들을 대중으로 전락시켜 하나의 공동체를 형성하는 등 전체주의 체제를 확립하는 데 성공한다. 이후 방범대장은 황궁 아파트 주민들을 결집시켜 공동체를 형성하고 자유와 평등이 보장되는 공론 영역을 마련한다. 그러나 전체주의 체제 아래에서 생존과 외부 세력의 침입 방지라는 최우선의 목표를 지향하는 과정 속에서 나타나는 방범대장의 ‘악의 평범성’은 전체주의 체제의 기틀을무너뜨리는 다양한 문제점을 드러내며 다음과 같다.
첫째, 황궁 아파트 주민들의 대중으로의 전락 그리고 이들의 자유와 평등이 보장될 수 있었던 공론 영역에서 사적 영역으로의 변질은 전체주의 체제의 위험성을 노출시키는 결과를 초래한다. 즉, 생존과 외부 세력의 침입 방지라는 최우선의 목표를향하여 나아가는 과정에서 발생하는 다양성의 상실과 개성 말살을 통한 잉여적 존재의 양산, 그리고 인간의 존엄성의 파괴는 대중이 해체되며 나아가 공동체가 몰락할 수밖에 없음을 의미한다. 둘째, 공론 영역이 아닌 사적 영역의 추구, 공동체 일원들과의유대가 아닌 일방적인 독단을 추구하는 방범대장의 모습은 ‘악의 평범성’이 얼마나위험한 것인지를 보여준다. 방범대장에게 나타나는 ‘악의 평범성’의 문제는 스스로를위험에 노출시키며, 이는 그의 실체 발각과 그로 인한 대중의 양분화 및 공동체의 분열을 일으킴으로써 전체주의 체제의 본질적인 약점이 드러나는 위기를 불러온다. 셋째, 외부 세력의 침입으로 인한 최우선의 목표 지향이 더 이상 불가능해질 경우 전체주의 체제는 몰락 위기를 겪는다. 이는 공동체의 구심점 역할을 하던 방범대장의 실체발각으로 인하여 그 전까지 최우선의 목표를 위하여 자신들의 생명까지 희생할 준비가 되어 있던 황궁 아파트 주민들의 믿음을 단번에 거둬들이는 결과로 나타난다. 다시말해 대중을 보호해 준 허구세계가 파괴되는 순간, 대중은 예전의 고립되고 나약한 개인, 즉 원인 모를 대규모 지진 앞에서 아무것도 할 수 없었던 절망에 빠진 불필요한 존재로 추락한다. 그로 인하여 더 이상 대중은 공동체를 지속할 수 없기 때문에 전체주의 체제는 몰락할 수밖에 없다.
이러한 <콘크리트 유토피아>에 나타나는 다양한 문제점은 현실 속 우리의 삶에서도 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 따라서 앞에서 살펴본 문제들로 인하여 발생할 수 있는 엄청난 위험과 비극을 사전에 방지하려는 꾸준한 노력이 뒷받침되어야만 한다.

영어초록

<Concrete Utopia> is a work that covers the process of formation, division, and collapse of a community under a totalitarian system mainly around the residents of the Hwanggung Apartment who have been degraded to the general public and the security chief in a post-apocalyptic worldview after a huge earthquake of unknown cause. In particular, the security chief succeeded in establishing a totalitarian system by degrading the residents of the Hwanggung Apartment to the general public and forming a community in order to achieve the top priority goals of survival and prevention of invasion by external forces in the post-apocalypse.
And then, the security chief united the residents of the Hwanggung Apartment to form a community and established a public sphere where freedom and equality are guaranteed. However, the security chief’s ‘banality of evil’, which appears in the process of pursuing the top priority goals of survival and prevention of invasion by external forces under a totalitarian system, reveals various problems that destroy the foundation of the totalitarian system as follows: First, the fall of the residents of the Hwanggung Apartment into the general public and the transformation of the public sphere, where their freedom and equality could be guaranteed, into the private sphere results in the exposure of the dangers of the totalitarian system. In other words, the mass production of surplus beings through the loss of diversity and the eradication of individuality in the process of moving toward the top priority goals of survival and prevention of invasion by external forces, and the destruction of human dignity mean that the general public will disintegrate and the community will inevitably collapse. Second, the security chief, who pursues the private sphere rather than the public sphere as well as unilateral dogmatism rather than bonds with community members, shows how dangerous the ‘banality of evil’ is. The problem of the ‘banality of evil’ of the security chief exposes himself to danger, which leads to the revelation of his true identity and the resulting polarization of the public and division of the community, thereby bringing about a crisis that exposes the inherent weaknesses of the totalitarian system. Third, a totalitarian system faces the risk of collapse when it is no longer possible to pursue its top priority goals due to invasion by external forces. This results in the immediate loss of trust from the residents of the Hwanggung Apartment, who had been prepared to sacrifice their lives for their top priority goals, due to the revelation of the identity of the security chief who had served as the pivot of the community. In other words, the moment when the fictional world that protected the public is destroyed, the public is degraded to the isolated and weak individuals they were before, that is, the hopeless and unnecessary beings who could do nothing in the face of a huge earthquake of unknown cause. As a result, the totalitarian system is bound to collapse because the public can no longer sustain the community.
The various problems that appear in <Concrete Utopia> can be easily found in our real lives. Therefore, continuous efforts should be made to prevent the enormous risks and tragedy that may be caused by the problems discussed above.
