This paper will introduce Carl Raschke’s religio-philosophical ideaabout a methodology of religious studies. The reason why the authorintroduces Raschke’s idea to Korean academic society is because the issueof justice has been deficient in our current discourses of religious studies.
For Raschke, religion contains a potentially emancipating power in itself.
From the beginning, religion has concerned with those who are weak andpowerless. It means not that this kind of concern is all about religion andreligious studies, but rather that concern for justice is a very crucialfactor constituting a religious structure within a society and its culture inquestion. It is associated with this question, what is religion? These days,however, most scholars of religion do not have any interest in thequestions of justice and religion. It may be due to the postmodern awareness that definition is violence. However, when one forgets thequestions of religion and justice, s/he also loses sight of the inherentliberative force of religion. Raschke believes that, when the methodologyof religious studies captures us on the generic singularity of excessivebeings in the existing structure of knowledge, our interest in a theory ofreligion can lead to the emancipating power of the religious.
