칼 라너의 근본적 결단(Grundentscheidung) 이론에 대한 비판적 연구 (A Critical Study on Karl Rahner’s Fundamental Option Theory)

초록

가정을 주제로 하여 최근에 두 차례 개최되었던 세계주교대의원회의에서의 토론 과정과 그 후속 사도적 권고 『사랑의 기쁨』에 대한 다양한 해석들 가운데에서 신앙과 도덕을 구분해서 바라보는 관점이 큰 호응을 얻고 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 이는 행위자와 행위, 법과 양심의 유대를 해체함으로써 개연론에 의거하여 ‘개별 사안에 따라’ 행위의 도덕성을 판단하려는 경향을 조장하고 있다.
본고는 이 같은 경향의 이론적 기초를 칼 라너의 신학적 인간학 특히 ‘근본적 결단’ 이론에서 발견하고 이를 비판적으로 접근하여 분석한다. 라너는 자유를 주체의 선험적 체험의 내용으로서 이해한다. 그래서 절대 존재의 지평에 대한 비주제적 앎을 바탕으로 자기 자신을 근본적으로 결정하는 초월론적 자유에 대해 언급한다. 이 자유는 반성의 대상 곧 선택이라는 인간적 행위의 대상이 될 수 없다. 행위가 아니라 존재의 차원에 정위되는 자유라고 할 수 있다. 초자연적 실존으로서의 인간이 역사 안에서 자유로이 행하는 범주적 선택들을 통하여 현실화되지만, 늘 그러한 것은 아니다. 근본적 결단이 범주적 선택들과 맺고 있는 유대는 단지 우연적이기 때문이다.
이 관점에 따르면, 하느님을 근본적으로 거부하는 결단을 내린 악마 같은 인간의 존재를 인정하게 된다. 하지만 이런 사람도 도덕적으로 옳은 행위를 수행할 수 있다. 창조되지 않은 은총에 대해 ‘예’라는 결단을 내린 사람도 범주적 세계에서 도덕적으로 옳지 않은 선택을 할 수 있다. 결국, 범주적 자유는 인격의 도덕적 특성을 온전히 드러내지 못하므로 선악을 판단하는 데에 있어서 무차별성 혹은 애매모호성을 띠게 된다.
신앙 행위(fides qua)를 긍정적인 근본적 결단과 동일시할 때, 그리스도교의 도덕규범은 유용한 것이지만 결정적인 것은 아니라고 이해된다. 교회 교도권이 인정해 온 소위 절대적 도덕률을 부정하면서 이혼･낙태･피임 등의 도덕성을 역사적･문화적 맥락 안에서 파악함으로써 ‘내적으로 악한 행위’이거나 죽을죄가 아니라고 보도록 이끈다. 이에 대한 도덕성의 최종적인 판단을 인간 실존이 지니고 있는 초월론적･내적 차원 즉 양심에 유보시킨다.
라너의 근본적 결단 이론은 윤리신학자인 J. 푹스와 B. 해링에 의해 계승･발전된다. 이들은 신앙과 유리된 도덕의 자율성을 강조하는 관점을 제시한다. 이는 하느님 사랑과 이웃 사랑의 분리를 함의한다. 역사적 사건으로서의 예수 그리스도에 대한 신앙, 특히 그분의 ‘십자가를 헛되이 하지 않도록’(1코린 1,17) 믿는 이들을 이끄는 교회에 대한 믿음을 약화시키는 효과를 동반한다.
교회는 신앙 행위를 초월론적 결단(optio)이 아니라, ‘인간적 행위’(actus humanus) 즉 근본적 선택(delectio)으로서 이해한다. 그리고 신앙 생활과 도덕 생활의 밀접한 관계를 강조한다. 이 같은 관점으로 프란치스코 교황의 『사랑의 기쁨』을 해석하고 내년에 반포 50주년을 맞이하는 바오로 6세의 회칙 『인간 생명』의 가르침에 다시 주목할 필요가 있겠다.

영어초록

In the iter of the recent two Synods of Bishops on the Family and in the various interpretations on the post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation “Amoris laetitia” emerged an increasingly influential viewpoint that separates faith from daily moral life. It leads to judging the morality of an act on ‘a case-by-case’ basis from a probabilistic perspective, demolishing vinculum not only between agent and act, but also between law and conscience.
Considering that the above-mentioned trend in the field of moral and pastoral theology has its own roots in Karl Rahner’s theological anthropology, this article intends to present a critical and analytical approach to his theory of optio fundamentalis(Grundentscheidung). Rahner identifies transcendental freedom with fundamental self-determination, based on an unthematic knowledge of Absolute Being(God), thinking of human freedom as a content of the human subject’s a priori experience. This freedom cannot be an object of reflection, i.e. of delectio which is actus humanus. This fundamental freedom, located at the level of esse, rather than of agere, is actualized by means of categorical delectiones, freely performed in history, done by the human person which is defined as supernatural existential. However, the nexus between fundamental option and categorical choices is not necessary, but occasional.
From this perspective, the existence of diabolic man who decisively says “no” to God may be possible to exist. But even such a person can make morally right choices. Those who say “yes” to the Gratia increata, can make morally false choices in the categorical world. As a result, the categorical freedom, unable to reveal perfectly moral characteristics of a person, can be expressed as indifference or obscurity in relation to moral judgement concerning the good or evil of an act.
When identifying fides qua with positive fundamental option, we come to understand that Christian moral norms are not what is decisive, albeit useful. Consequently, it leads one to believe that divorce, abortion, and contraception are neither viewed as intrincese malum, nor as mortal sins, because their morality could be evaluated only in a specific historical and cultural context, while the so-called moral absolutes sustained by the Church’s Magisterium are totally negated. The ultimate moral judgement concerning these acts is reserved for a transcendental and interior sphere of the human as existential, that is, moral conscience.
The Rahnerian theory of fundamental option has been succeeded and developed by moral theologians such as J. Fuchs and B. Häring. These affirm the autonomy of moral life separated from faith. Dissolving the bond between love of God and love of our neighbor, implicated in their opinion, induces weakening faith in Jesus Christ who is a historical Event, as well as in His Church that teaches and guides her faithfuls “ut non evacuetur crux Christi”(1Cor 1,17).
The Church does not take fides qua into consideration as optio fundamentalis, but as delectio fundamentalis which is actus humanus, accentuating an intimate relationship between faith and daily moral life. It is this perspective that should be noted when we interpret Pope Francis’s “Amoris laetitia” and reread Pope Paul IV’s “Humanae vitae” of which the 50th anniversary of the publication will be celebrated in next year.
