‘눈치’ 문화 속에서 박사과정을 병행하는 간호사의 다중역할 경험: 문화기술지 연구 (Multiple Role Experiences of Nurses Pursuing Doctoral Programs within the Culture of ‘Nunchi’: An ethnographic study)

초록

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the ‘nunchi’ culture experienced by nurses balancing hospital work and doctoral studies in South Korea. Methods: Using Spradley’s ethnographic method, data were collected through participant observation and individual interviews from October to November 2023 with eight hospital nurses pursuing PhDs. Descriptive and focused observations were conducted during PhD classes and breaks, followed by in-person interviews. Data were analyzed through domain, taxonomic, componential analysis, and cultural theme discovery. Results: Three categories emerged: ‘weight of indebtedness pressing from all directions,’ ‘conscious efforts to compensate,’ and ‘recharging through self-awareness.’ Participants felt unease from negative workplace gazes and work constraints due to pursuing doctoral studies. They worried about disappointing academic advisors and peers. They also experienced guilt about neglecting family roles. They responded by upholding primary professional responsibilities, building positive relationships, and expressing appreciation to others. Despite feeling self-pity, they discovered personal growth through these challenges and gained strength to move forward. Conclusion: Nurses balancing hospital work and doctoral studies experienced complex ‘nunchi’ dynamics requiring constant effort across multiple roles. The ‘nunchi’ culture created uncomfortable relationships by making them conscious of others’ gazes but simultaneously served as a mechanism for relationship adjustment and personal growth.
