초록

Clothing is one of the ways people express themselves. Studying the female body and its physical characteristics during middle age provides useful information for designing patterns and clothing for this demographic. My study specifically examines the changes that occur throughout the lower half of the body during the middle phase of a woman’s life. The study is conducted by dividing the life span into three parts, obtaining values for each phase and comparing the average values for each phase. In addition, I analyze the physical characteristics of the lower body using the index figure. My study uses data from women between the ages of 35 and 65, as reported in “The 5th National People’s Physical Condition Sampling Survey.” In terms of the research method, SPSSWIN 12.0 is used for dispersion and reason analysis.


The major results of this research are as follows.
1. Compared to early and mid middle aged women, the women in late middle age show the increase in waist breadth. Regarding hip width, women in early-middle age are observed wider than one in later middle aged women. The hip depth to the weight becomes wider in mid middle age and become thinner in later middle age. But the increasing rate of hip circumference is lesser than the increasing rate of weight as they get older.
2. As one gets older, the increase of waist breadth is larger than the one of hip width. And the increase of hip depth is more distinct than waist depth. Especially, as age increases, the depth of waist becomes larger than waist breadth, the body shape which is from waist to hip becomes closed to the shape of H and finally becomes round type as a right.
3. Hip height, crotch height, waist height, and iliac spine height are decreased significantly in late middle age. However, total length to height become longer. Thus, it could be understood as upper body rate to the height increases whereas lower body rate is decreased. And that means, women's lower body becomes shorter as one grows older.
4. When the average of analysed items are compared, as they grow older, the thigh circumference becomes smaller and the minimum leg circumference becomes larger. However, considering the rate to hip circumference, thigh circumference and minimum leg circumference size become relatively smaller.
