초록

본 논문의 목표는 울리츠카야 작품 속에 나타난 모성 신화의 변화를 살펴보고, 고통 받는 모성을 치유하고자 사용하고 있는 작가의 글쓰기 전략은 무엇인지 고찰하는 것이다.
러시아현대작가 울리츠카야의 작품 속에서 현실의 고통을 가장 치열하게 느끼는 등장인물은 주로 여성, 그중에서도 누구보다 어머니의 형상으로 나타난다. 페미니즘 관점에서 모녀 관계는 중요한 쟁점이 된다. 인내하는 어머니의 가르침으로부터 순종적인 딸이 세뇌된 ‘관습적 모성’을 습득하고 이것을 다음 세대에게 다시 대물림시키는 것이야말로 가부장제를 지탱해온 안정적인 내조이며 동시에 여성들에게 강요되어온 개인적, 주체적, 자발적 희생이다.
독자는 울리츠카야의 작품 속에서 치열한 페미니즘 모성담론의 비판을 읽어내기보다 참담한 역사적 상황 속에서 그 힘든 현실을 살아내는 어머니로서, 딸로서의 여성들을 만나게 된다. 작가는 모성 담론에 대한 재평가의 필요성과 변화의 노력을 작품 속에서 끊임없이 사고함과 동시에 전통적 모성 가치를 부정하지도, 새로운 시대의 딸들의 해방과 자유만을 위해 투쟁하지도 않는다. 현실을 살아내는 모든 어머니와 딸의 형상들을 존중하며 오직 그들의 삶이 해피엔딩으로 그려지길 바라는 작가의 마음이 마술적 사실주의(magical realism) 기법을 통하여 반영된다. 독자는 울리츠카야 작품에서 모성신화의 변화와 그 치유, 혹독한 시대를 살아가는 어머니와 딸의 인생에 대한 위로와 희망을 읽게 된다.

영어초록

This article aims to examine the change of the maternal mythology and introduce a narrative strategy for overcoming matrophobia focusing on the mother-daughter relationship in L. Ulitskaya.
Ulitskaya illustrates domestic tragedy for women in the post-Stalinist era. Underemployed and often receiving little to no help from their husbands, her heroines demonstrate the ongoing struggle to care for children while surviving abuse and other dangers when living on the brink of personal destruction.
From a feminist viewpoint, the mother-daughter relationship is an important issue. In many cultures, daughters are brainwashed to acquire a 'traditional sacrificed motherhood' from their mother and pass it on to the next generation. It is a stable belief that has been imposed on women and has maintained patriarchal societies around the world.
In Ulistskaya, readers meet mothers and daughters who go through hard times. The author constantly talks about the necessity of changing the discourse about motherhood and bringing forth women with a newly developed free spirit. She does not deny the value of traditional maternal sacrifice and she does not struggle only for the liberation and freedom of the daughters of the new era. She does acknowledge that tradition has beneficial aspects but that change is needed in how women see themselves in the modern world.
She respects all mothers and daughters who went through hard times and wishes their lives to end happily. This is reflected through her narrative strategy - magical realism. Ulitskaya chooses to deal with the perpetual ideological crisis of women being subjugated by society by writing in the genre of magical realism with its focus on the inner world of human experience. The goal of her magical realism offers the disillusioned Russian women a new vision as a way to deal with the painful but real political, economic, and social situation. The reader experiences the change in maternal mythology, its healing, and the comfort and hope for the lives of mothers and daughters living in harsh times.
