초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 이본파렐과 셸리맥나마라는 그라프톤 아키텍츠의 공동 설립자로 2021년 프리츠커상을 수상하였다. 이는 첫 아일랜드 건축가이자 첫 여성 공동수상자로 그들의 40여 년 간의 협력관계와 장소 연구를 기반으로 하는 새로운 지리로서의 건축이라는 그들의 건축 철학 연구의 결실을 인정받았다고 할 수 있겠다. 이들은 서로의 철학은 존중하였으며, 상대방을 직시함으로서 진정한 상호연결성을 보여주었다. 이러한 태도는 건축을 대하는 자세에서도 나타났으며, 예리한 관찰과 장소에 대한 깊은 연구를 도시와 건축의 깊은 관계성을 구축하고자 하였다. 프리츠커 심사위원은 이들의 공공시설 디자인을 높이 평가하며, 지역사회의 결속을 강화하는 "좋은 이웃(good neighbors)"이라 평가하였다. 이에 본 연구는 파렐과 맥나마라의 건축 철학과 맥락주의 관점에 입각하여 그들의 건축을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 건축이 도시 속에서 가져야 할 지속 가능한 디자인의 방향성을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. (연구범위 및 방법) 연구 범위는 그라프톤 아키텍츠의 건축물 중 교육시설로 한정하였으며, 그들의 출신지역인 아일랜드를 제외하여 사례 분석의 객관성을 확보하고자 하였다. 선정된 건축은 그들의 건축 정신과 함께 새로운 지역에 대한 그들의 깊은 이해와 지역 사회의 맥락을 추구하고자 하는 건축 특성을 연구하였다. 연구 방법은 첫째, 파렐과 맥나마라의 강의, 기사 및 전시를 토대로 그들의 건축 정신을 고찰하고, 문헌과 참고서적을 중심으로 맥락주의의 개념을 파악한다. 둘째, 그라프톤 아키텍츠의 건축을 분석하기 위한 맥락적 요소를 역사적 요소, 물리적 요소, 사회적 요소로 크게 구분하여 각 요소의 특성을 도출한다. 셋째, 선정된 건축물을 앞서 도출한 그들의 건축 정신과 맥락적 요소를 토대로 그 특징을 분석하여 정리한다. 이러한 과정을 통해 그들의 건축에서 나타나는 특징을 활용하여 도시 속 건축의 디자인 방향성을 고찰하고자 한다. (결과) 그라프톤 아키텍츠의 건축 분석 결과를 살펴보면 이들은 각 지역이 갖는 맥락을 객관적이면서 세심하게 연구하였으며, 그들의 건축 정신을 기반으로 지역 사회와 강하게 연결될 수 있는 공간을 건축 안에 배치하여 도시와 건축이 강하게 결속되는 좋은 사례를 보여주고 있다. (결론) 본 연구는 건축이 하나의 오브제로서의 가치만을 추구하던 행태를 벗어나 지역 사회의 맥락을 중시하여 도시와 건축 간의 긴밀한 관계를 회복하고자 하는 건축의 디자인 방향을 제시함에 있어 파렐과 맥나마라의 건축 정신과 맥락 요소를 활용하여 현대사회의 관계성을 회복하고 지역사회와 건축 간의 유기적 결합을 강구하는 지속 가능한 공간 계획으로 발전할 수 있는 기초 연구가 되길 바란다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara established Grafton Architects, and in 2021, they were awarded the Pritzker Prize. Through the award, they were recognized for their 40-year partnership and their architectural philosophy of "Architecture as New Geography" based on studying places was recognized. They respected each other and showed true interconnection by facing the other person. This attitude appeared even when facing architecture, and it was intended to establish a deep relationship between the city and architecture through keen observation and deep research on the place. The Pritzker Prize jury highly appreciated the design of public facilities among their works, calling them "good neighbors" for strengthening community solidarity. Therefore, this study examines their architecture based on their architectural philosophy and contextualism, and presents the direction of sustainable design that architecture should have in the city. (Method) The scope of the study was limited to educational facilities among the buildings of Grafton Architects, and it was intended to secure the objectivity of case analysis by excluding Ireland, their home country. The selected architectures studied the architectural characteristics of their deep understanding of the new place and pursuing the context of the local community along with their architectural philosophy. The research methods are as follows. First, they examine their architectural philosophy based on lectures, articles, and exhibitions, and grasp the contextualism focused on literature and reference books. Second, for research, contextual elements are divided into historical, physical, and social elements, and the characteristics of each element are derived. Third, the selected architectures are analyzed and organized based on their architectural philosophy and contextual elements derived above. Through this process, we examine the design direction of architecture in the city by utilizing the characteristics of their architecture. (Results) Examining the architectural analysis results of Grafton Architects, they studied the context of each region objectively and carefully, and based on their architectural philosophy, a space that can be strongly connected to the local community is placed in the architecture, demonstrating a good example of strong unity between the city and the architecture. (Conclusion) In suggesting a design direction to restore the close relationship between city and architecture by emphasizing the context of the local community, the architecture of Farrell and McNamara moves away from the behavior of pursuing only the value of architecture as an object. It is hoped that this will be basic research that can be developed into a sustainable space plan that uses elements to restore the relationship of modern society and to devise an organic connection between the local community and architecture.
