초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 페터 춤토르의 건축은 기능적 요구를 넘어 상징성을 통해 의미와 정체성을 전달하며, 재료의 본질과 지역 맥락을 반영해 독창적이고 감각적인 공간 경험을 제공한다. 본 연구는 춤토르 건축의 상징성과 정체성 구현 방식을 분석하여, 그의 독창성과 현대 건축에서 상징성을 활용하는 새로운 접근법을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. (연구방법) 본 연구는 문헌 조사를 통해 춤토르의 건축 철학과 상징적 이미지 개념을 고찰하고, 기존 연구를 바탕으로 이론적 배경을 구축하였다. 이후 춤토르의 대표 건축물들을 사례로 선정하여, 각 건축물에서 공간의 자연과 재료의 조화, 정체성과 지역적 맥락, 개념적 의미와 가치, 상징성 및 이미지 표현이라는 네 가지 분석 개념을 설정하고 이를 바탕으로 구체적 분석을 진행하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 각 건축물에서 상징적 이미지가 어떻게 구체적으로 표현되고 있는지를 파악하고자 하였다. (결과) 사례 분석 결과, 춤토르 건축의 상징적 이미지는 주로 재료와 장소성을 기반으로 형성되며, 특정한 의미와 정체성을 전달하는 데 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 확인하였다. 예를 들어, 테르메 발스는 주변 자연 환경과의 통합된 경험을 제공하며, 빛과 재료의 상호작용을 통해 깊이 있는 공간 경험을 가능하게 한다. 이러한 상징적 이미지 사용은 춤토르 건축물의 외형적 특성에 그치지 않고, 공간의 감각적·정서적 경험을 통해 사용자에게 독창적인 메시지를 전달하는 강력한 의미 전달 도구로 작용하고 있다. 각 건축물 사례를 통해 춤토르의 상징적 이미지가 건축 공간에 부여하는 문화적 의미와 사용자와의 상호작용 방식을 규명하였다. (결론) 본 연구는 페터 춤토르의 건축에서 상징성이 재료와 장소성을 기반으로 특정 의미와 정체성을 효과적으로 전달하며, 사용자의 감각적·정서적 경험을 풍부하게 하는 핵심 요소임을 밝혔다. 특히, 춤토르의 건축은 단순한 기능적 공간을 넘어 자연과 재료의 조화를 통해 독창적이고 깊이 있는 공간 경험을 창출하며, 이는 현대 건축에서 상징적 이미지를 설계에 적용하는 새로운 접근법을 제시한다. 또한, 춤토르 건축의 상징성을 통해 현대 건축에서 정체성과 사용자 경험을 연결하는 설계 원리를 도출하고, 그의 건축 철학이 가지는 독창성을 재조명함으로써 상징적 표현과 공간 설계의 새로운 가능성을 제안한 데 있다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) Peter Zumthor’s architecture transcends functional requirements by conveying meaning and identity through symbolic elements. His work reflects the essence of materials and their regional context, thereby offering a unique and sensory spatial experience. Beyond mere practicality, Zumthor’s designs incorporate symbolic imagery that imparts cultural significance and distinct identities to the space that he creates. This study analyzes how symbolism and identity are realized in Zumthor’s architecture, ultimately identifying the originality of his approach and presenting new strategies for the application of symbolic elements in contemporary architectural design. (Method) Drawing on an extensive literature review, this study first examines Zumthor’s architectural philosophy and the concept of symbolic imagery to build a theoretical foundation based on existing studies. Subsequently, representative Zumthor buildings were selected as case studies. Four analytical concepts were employed for each chosen project: harmony of space with nature and materials, the relationship between identity and regional context, conceptual meaning and value embedded in the design, and the manifestation of symbolism and image expression. By structuring the analysis around these four dimensions, this study sought to clarify how symbolic imagery is concretely expressed in each architectural work.(Results) The case study analysis revealed that Zumthor’s symbolic imagery primarily emerges from the properties of materials and sense of place. This approach plays a crucial role in conveying meaning and identity. For example, Therme Vals provides an integrated experience that seamlessly blends with the surrounding natural environment. The interplay between light and material enables users to engage in profound spatial experiences. Such symbolic imagery extends beyond a building’s external appearance and functions as a potent means of transmitting an original message through the user’s sensory and emotional experiences. By examining these selected works, this study delineated the cultural significance embedded in Zumthor’s symbolic imagery and clarified how users interact with architectural spaces at an experiential level.(Conclusions) This study concludes that in Peter Zumthor’s architecture, symbolism, rooted in the intrinsic qualities of materials and a strong sense of place, effectively conveys specific meanings and identities, enriching the user’s sensory and emotional experience. Zumthor’s work creates original and profound spatial encounters by harmonizing nature and materials, offering a valuable precedent for new approaches for integrating symbolic imagery into contemporary architecture. Furthermore, by reevaluating the originality of Zumthor’s architectural philosophy, this study identifies design principles that connect identity with user experience, thereby proposing new possibilities for symbolic expression and spatial design within modern architectural practice.
