한국 고전춤의 개념에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Concept of Classical Dance in Korea)

초록

고전춤은 지역별 민속춤에 관한 연구가 활발하게 되어 이들 춤이 전통춤으로 이동된 배경을 시작으로 서서히 그 자취를 감춰나갔다. 때때로 시대적 흐름은 연구하는 주체가 어떠한 가치를 부여하는가에 따라 다른 개념을 지닌 용어로 바뀌어 사용되기도 한다.
현재 고전춤은 용어의 혼용 속에서 어수선하게 전통춤과 공존하고 있다. 전통춤은 역사성과 시간성에 의한 것으로 전통은 비전통과 나뉘며, 전통에 반(反)하는 개념으로는 혁신을 들 수 있다. 이러한 전통춤은 갑오경장(1894)을 기점으로 한 근대성의 개념과 함께 살펴보아야 한다. 무엇보다 고전춤의 논의를 재고해야하는 이유는 현시대에 이르러 궁중춤의 재구성무와 고전적 가치의 춤이 등장하였고 이들은 개인의 개성을 포괄하여 펼치며 신고전의 기법을 지니며 고전춤을 향한 움직임의 등장으로 우리는 이것을 어떠한 용어로 부를 것에 대한 논의에 서게 되었다. 따라서 고전춤의 성격 규명은 꼭 필요한 만큼 절실하다.
연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째 고전춤의 의미론적 측면은 충효사상을 바탕으로 예(禮)를 통한 수양에서 배움과 존경을 갖고 수직적 관계로서 질서를 중시한다. 이것은 흠신(欠身)의 의미 속에 있는 마음과 음양오행(陰陽五行)을 통해 덕(德)을 받들어 성실하게 행하는 것으로서 질서를 바로 잡는데 있다. 고전춤은 조화성(harmonity) 속에서 영혼이 중용과 질서를 가져야 한다는 것과 장중한 의식처럼 인간의 욕망을 억제하는 예의규범을 통해 절제를 지녀야하고 이것을 주체하는 향유자의 주도로서 규범성(normality)을 결합시킨 춤으로 만들어졌다.
둘째, 고전춤의 기술적 측면은 정중동의 절제미와 춤의 구조에 드러나는 대칭성 그리고 원기(元氣)를 나타내는 것으로 힘을 모아 끌어 들이는 내부적 힘의 확보를 지닌다. 특히, 나막신을 신고 발을 딛는 것 같은 움직임으로 내딛는 발에 몸무게를 실어 무겁고 느리게 추는 향섭족도(響屧足蹈)와 앞으로 가고 뒤로 후퇴하는 진퇴(進退)의 춤사위, 그리고 이와 더불어 고풍스런 미소의 화전태(花前態)가 주요한 기술적 측면에 포함된다. 이로서 고전춤은 중후하고, 우아하며 넘치지도 부족하지도 않게 추는 춤으로 대칭성과 균형성을 지닌 정형화의 구속력을 지닌다.
이로서 고전춤의 개념은 감성보다는 이성의 요소로서 정연한 ‘형식’을 중요시 하며 균형성을 통한 수평적인 안정된 질서를 추구하여 기존의 질서와 존재를 유지하는 것을 요구한다. 고전춤은 민속춤이 주관성과 개성을 강조한다면, 이와 달리 작품의 객관성에 중점을 두는 춤이다. 특히 고전춤은 ‘과거로부터의 지속성’이 가장 중요하다. 현시대에서 새로운 신고전춤이 등장하며 고전춤은 변화를 맞이하고 있다. 고전춤의 구속력은 형식을 지닌 ‘규칙에 대한 탐구’로서 대중적 동의를 얻을 때 그것을 우리는 고전춤이라 부른다.

영어초록

As the study on regional traditional dances became more active, classical dances slowly lost its identity on the backgrounds of its transformation into traditional dances. Sometimes the historical flow causes some terms with different concepts to be used instead of its original meaning depending on what value is added by the subject being studied.
The current term of classical dance coexists in a disordered mix with the term traditional dance. Traditional dance is based on historic and temporal aspect which is divided into traditional and non-traditional, and should be observed with the concept of modernity that began with Gapohgyeongjang (institutional reformation policy in 1895). The reason why we must reconsider the discussion on classical dance is due the emergence of dance with classical reconfiguration and value, which led to the current discussion on what to call the movement of classical dances that hold individual characteristics and neo-classical techniques. Therefore the identification of the classical dance’s characteristic is as imperative as the need for its continued existence.
The results of the study are as follows.
First, the semantic aspect of classical dance is based on filial piety that emphasizes vertical relationship of respect and order that is learned through self-discipline in propriety. This is about keeping order that stems from the meaning of low bowing and diligently practicing the virtues of the Five Elements in the theory of Yin and Yang. It refers to the golden mean and order of the spirit within harmonity. Classical dance is an expression of self-control that suppresses the human desire through the practice of propriety much like a solemn ritual, which combines normality through the act of practice by the dancer.
Second, the technical aspect of classical dance can be described as the beauty of moderation in ‘motion amidst rest’, symmetry revealed in the structure of the dance, vigor, and the internal power that attracts by combining strength. Especially, there are dances such as Hyangseopjokdo which is danced with heavy and slow footfall as if stepping with wooden shoes and Jintoi dance style that has advancing and retreating movements. There is also Hwajeongtae, which is danced with a traditional smile. Classical dances are solemn and elegant that is neither over the top nor lacking, and carries ‘the binding force of standardization’ in symmetry and balance.
Classical dance emphasizes reason rather than emotional elements through orderly formality and seeks stable vertical order through balance, and it demands ‘former order and existence’. If traditional dances emphasize subjectivity and individuality, classical dances put more importance on the objectivity of the art. ‘Continuity of the past’ is especially important in classical dance. Currently, the emergence of new classical dances is bringing change to the world of classical dance. The binding force of classical dance is ‘the study of rules’ with form, and we can call it a classical dance when the consent is given by the general public.
