초록

한국에는 국가 무형문화재로 지정되어 있는 탈춤이 많이 있다. 가산오광대, 통영오광대, 고성오광대, 진주오광대, 영등오광대, 김해오광대, 은율탈춤, 봉산탈춤, 창원오광대, 마산오광대, 남구오광대, 북구오광대, 합천오광대등 그 수를 헤아릴 수 없을 정도이다. 이중에는 이미 국가 문화재로 지정되어 전수, 보존되고 있는 문화재도 있고 문화재 지정은 되어 있지 않으나 이미 발굴되어서 활발하게 공연되고 있는 작품도 있다. 또한 은율탈춤이나 봉산탈춤은 북한지역의 탈춤이지만 그 내용이나 연희 동작이 우수하기 때문에 이미 발굴되어서 탈춤보존회가 조직되어 이수자와 전수자들이 열심히 보존활동을 하고 있다.
기존의 한국탈춤은 그 내용면에서 비슷비슷한 작품들이 많다. 양반들의 축첩풍조나 사찰 스님들의 파계승에 관한 내용 등이 많고 전체적인 내용은 권선징악 형태의 내용이 주류를 이루고 있다 해도 과언이 아니다. 물론 의상이나 연희동작 등이 상이한 작품이 있고 그 내용면에서 타의 작품에서는 흉내 내기 어려운 모범적인 작품들도 많이 있다.
그러나 지금은 국제화 시대이자 현대화 시대이다. 이 시대의 탈춤이 많이 출현해야 한다. 앞으로 오백년, 또는 천년 후에는 우리의 후손들에게 어떤 예술작품을 남겨 줄 것인가. 어떤 모범적이고 우수한 탈춤을 후대에 물려 줄 것인지 고민해야 한다.
한국형 창작탈춤으로 “도깨비탈”이 있다. 이 작품은 이 시대에 탄생한 신 창작탈춤이기 때문에 이 탈춤을 많이 소개하고 연희하여 많은 관객들이 즐기고 감동 받을 수 있는 작품으로 소개하고 더욱 더 발전시킬 필요가 있다. 이 작품은 익살과 해학 면에서는 타의 추종을 불허할 정도로 즐겁고 재미있는 작품이다.
과거의 작품들이 익살과 해학을 강조하고 그 내용에 있어서는 권선징악의 내용으로 끝나는 작품이 많은 것에 비하여 창작탈춤 “도깨비탈”은 이러한 내용에다 진정한 이 시대의 남녀 간의 사랑이야기를 주제로 하였고 진심과 우정을 강조하고 있으며 선하고 착한 일을 하는 사람이 성공하는 세상임을 관객들에게 알리고 홍보하는 내용으로 구성되어 있다.
창작탈춤 “도깨비탈”은 배우들이 착용하고 사용하는 무대의상과 무대소품들이 모두다 이 시대에 사용하는 현대적 비품으로 제작되어 있는 것이 특징이다. 배경음악도 전통음향과 현대음향을 혼용하여 편집하였으며 주인공이 부르는 주제 음악곡도 현 시대의 대중가요와 전통클래식 음악 및 국악가요를 혼용하여 사용하고 있다. 이러한 노력은 관객들에게 한 발짝 더 가까이 걸어가기 위한 목적이라 할 수 있다.
창작탈춤 “도깨비탈”은 국내는 물론 외국 공연에서도 큰 호평을 받을 수 있으리라 기대하고 있다. 그 이유는 작품제작과 연출단계에서 부터 기존의 작품과는 차별적인 내용으로 연출되고 있기 때문이다. 이 작품이 이 시대를 대표할 수 있는 우수한 예술작품으로 평가되어 후대에 까지 모범적인 한류화 창작탈춤으로 길이 남을 수 있기 바라면서 앞으로 이 작품을 더욱 더 보충하고 연구하여 세계 각국에서 우수한 예술작품으로 초청공연을 할 수 있고 성공할 수 있는 창작탈춤으로 발전할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

A number of masked dance dramas are designated as national intangible cultural properties in Korea. They include Kasan ogwangdae, Tongyeong ogwangdae, Goseoung ogwangdae, Jinju ogwangdae, Yeongdeung ogwangdae, Kimhae ogwangdae, Eunyeoul talchum, Bongsan talchum, Changwon ogwangdae, Masan ogwangdae, Namgu ogwangdae, Bukgu ogwangdae, Hapcheon ogwangdae and the list goes on.
Some of them have been declared national intangible cultural properties in the past and efforts are being made to preserve and pass them onto the next generation. The others are yet to be declared, but are discovered and actively played on stage. Despite the fact that Eunyeoul talchum and Bongsan talchum were originally performed in various provinces of North Korea, their excellent content and performing acts made it possible to organize and preserve in today’s societies. Hence the instructors and the trainees are undertaking the grand task of preserving the traditional masked dance dramas.
Conventional korean masked dance dramas bear some similarities in their contents. They usually deal with stories of depraved monks or the upper classes’ tendency of keeping mistresses, ultimately proposing the idea of encouraging good and punishing evil. But of course, dissimlarities in the costumes or performing acts are also observed. Some dramas show exceptional narratives beyond comparison.
Nonetheless, we need modern renditions of masked dance dramas as the world is becoming more internationalized and modernized. We are obliged to contemplate what artistic pieces are worthy enough to pass on to distant generations in the future. It is our liability to decide which masked dance dramas are classic enough to benefit our sons and daughters.
Dokkaebi ttal is a Korean creative mask dance drama. Since the days in which it was written, there has been a need to introduce and perform it more often so that vast audiences can reach and enjoy it. Consequently, we foresee its development in the future. This drama excels other ones in its humor and clownery, making it a very enjoyable piece.
Masked dance dramas in the past featured humor and clownery and promoted the idea of encouraging good and punishing evil. Those properties were inherited to dokkaebi ttal and further complementation was made such as friendships, sincerity, and true romance of these days. It also features and promotes that the key to success is being good and doing good deeds.
Dokkaebi ttal is also characterized by the fact that the actors’ costumes and stage properties are modernized, which means they are the ones we use today. It is also worth noting that both traditional and contemporary music are used in the background, just as Korean classical and today’s pop songs both make theme songs of the actors. The marry of classical and modern music aims to make mask dance dramas more accessible to audiences.
I expect dokkaebi ttal to receive wide acclamation from foreign audiences as well as from domestic audiences, because it was produced with unprecedented contents from the very beginning. The expectation goes further, I hope this drama can be valuated to be the one that represents this era and remains for the next generation as a model of Korean creative masked dance dramas. In order for the expectation to be realized, adequate studies and supplements should follow so that the drama can be invited to international soils and ultimately establish its name as a successful creative masked dance drama.
