제주입춘굿의 성격과 축제사적 의의 (A Study on the Characteristics and Historical Meanings of ‘Jeju Ipchoongut’)

초록

이 연구는 전근대로부터 근대초기에 이르기까지 전승된 제주입춘굿의 절차와 내용을 파악하고 그 성격과 축제사적 의의를 살펴보기 위해 이루어졌다.
관련 기록 등을 근거로 제주입춘굿의 실체를 살펴본 뒤, 다른 지역에서 전승된 입춘제와 비교한 결과 다음과 같은 특징이 드러났다.
첫째, 입춘 전날에 행사가 시작되어 입춘날까지 이어진다.
둘째, 제의의 대상이 낭쉐[나무소]이다.
셋째, 호장(戶長)과 무당이 중요한 연행을 담당한다.
넷째, 호장의 모의 춘경(春耕)은 관아 내에서 이루어지며, 객사와 동헌에서 반복적으로 연행된다.
다섯째, 호장의 춘경 과정에 탈놀이가 수반되며, 이를 지켜보는 이들이 적극적으로 호응한다.
여섯째, 여민동락의 뒤풀이가 이루어진 뒤, 새해의 풍농과 무사안녕을 기원하는 무당들의 굿이 사창(司倉) 등에서 연행된다.
다른 지역의 입춘제도 일정하게 비유교적인 요소를 포함하고 있지만, 제주의 입춘굿은무당이 중요한 연행을 담당하고 다양한 연행이 유교식 예제와 상당히 다르다는 점에서, 가장 비유교적인 면모를 보여준다. 무당은 낭쉐의 제작과 낭쉐고사, 낭쉐몰이와 곡점(穀占), 탈놀이 등의 연행에 주요 연행자로 참여했고, 이들 연행은 유교식 예제와 거리가 있는 것이었다. 특히 제의의 대상이 낭쉐라는 점은 제주입춘굿이 유교식 예제에서 많이 벗어난 것임을 잘 보여준다.
이처럼 제주입춘굿은 그 연행의 다채로움과 역동성 그리고 지배이념과 체제로부터의 자유로움 등 여러 가지 면에서, 다른 지역의 입춘제에 비해 높은 지역성과 축제성을 보여주는 사례라고 할 수 있다. 한편 제주입춘굿을 다른 지역의 ‘무당굿형’ 고을축제와 비교해 보면, 대상 신과 연행의 구성 및 내용은 다르지만 연행집단과 연행의 전체적 흐름 등은 상당히 유사하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이런 점 등을 고려할 때 제주입춘굿은, 전근대 ‘무당굿형’ 고을축제의 일반적 성격을 공유하는 가운데, 토착적 전통을 담지해온 지역 축제문화의 산물이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to understand the procedure and the content of the ‘Jeju Ipchoongut’ that was long handed down from the pre-modern society to the early modern period and to examine its characteristics and significance in terms of the history of the Korean festival.
The study has conducted literary review of relevant records and information to find out the essence and true nature of Jeju Ipchoongut and identified the following distinctive characteristics that are differentiated from the Ipchoon (the first day of spring) festivals handed down in other regions nationwide.
First, the traditional Ipchoon ritual act in other regions have their activities not performed except on the day of Ipchoon, or the onset of spring. on the other hand, Jeju had its ritualistic activities commence from the day prior to Ipchoon.
Second, the Jeju Ipchoongut’s divinity is Nangshwe(木牛) which is a saturnalia with the character of Yongsin(dragon god) added.
Third, not only Hojang(戶長, headman of a county) served as the main performer but also shamans and Gisaengs(Korean geishas) participated in main performances.
Fourth, the simulated spring plowing is carried out in a government office by Hojang, and is repeatedly performed in a guesthouse and in Magistrate’s Office.
Fifth, the simulated spring plowing by Hojang is accompanied with mask play and the spectators respond with a big smile.
Sixth, after the entertainment of Yeo-min-dong-nak(與民同樂), a Gut performed wishing for an abundant harvest and wellbeing good luck of the New Year in Sachang (司倉). and Ssalpuri performed intended to drive out evil spirits and demons and to relieve misfortune.
Ipchoon rituals in other regions include a certain extent of non-Confucian elements but the Ipchoongut features shamans leading the performance of rituals and a variety of performances differentiated from the Confucian rituals and formalities, indicating the presence of the most non-Confucian aspect.
Shaman engaged in a variety of ritual performances, including preparation of Nangshwe, Nangshwegosa(Nangshwe ritural), Nangshwemori and Gokjeom(穀占, grain divination), mask play as one of the key performers and the ritual performances participated by shaman were not included in the Confucian rituals and formalities. In particular, the Jeju Ipchoongut shows a stark difference from the Confucian rituals in that its target deity is Nangshwe.
As such, the Jeju Ipchoongut is a good example that showcases its unique localities and festive features as opposed to those in other regions in that its performances feature diversity and dynamism with independence from the ruling ideology and system. Meanwhile, the Jeju Ipchoongut has a general resemblance to Danogut, which belongs to the category of county festival led by shaman in that its target deity features places higher emphasis on its agricultural functionality instead of being a regular protective guardian of county that governs the general affairs of the community. With this taken into consideration, the Jeju Ipchoongut should be regarded as a cultural heritage that has successfully maintained the indigenous tradition since the Tamra period while sharing the general character of the pre-modern shaman-led county festival.
