    초록

In the history of Israel Exodus is one of the most crucial events. It gave birth to the community of Israel and made Israel inherit the land that YHWH promised to the patriarchs. Although within the story of Exodus every single episode is worth mentioning, the ten plague narratives cannot be exceptions. This study focuses on the sixth plague. The text in Ex 9:8-12 is analyzed according to the composition analysis method whose main intention is to find the conceptuality in the text itself. My own translation of each verse is followed by thorough studies on the various theological concepts.
After the fifth plague where all the livestock of the Egyptians were killed, YHWH asked Moses to throw handfuls of ashes from the oven toward heaven. Those ashes turned into fine dust and caused humans and animals to suffer from boils in all the land of Egypt. This is the content of the sixth plague in Exodus 9:8-12. The expression "all the land of Egypt" shows us that fine dust, which was ash in the beginning, would drop on the land and the Egyptians and animals standing upon the land could be the sixth plague's target.
When Moses did what he was told to do, fine dust produced infections with boils on humans and animals. They were not able to stay on their feet because of the infections. Instead of reporting that they suffered from the infections severely, the fact that they could not stand up in front of Moses is focused in the text. It means that they could not put their feet upon the land. That is, the plague that was brought upon the land, made the Egyptians and the animals who were supposed to stay on their feet, incapable of standing on the land. This implies that the plague caused by fine dust indicates the conceptuality of the land.
And the reason why only the magicians are mentioned among the Egyptians is twofold. First, they functioned as doctors in Egypt. They were supposed to cure the infections, but they became the victim of the plague. Second, they were thought as the representatives of the Egyptian gods. However, they could not do anything to imitate or get rid of the plague. This proves that their gods were nothing but the illusion. The sixth plague shows that YHWH is the only Creator of the universe and the victory over against the gods of Egypt is pronounced.
The fine dust was upon the land of Egypt and so were the humans and the animals who suffered from the infections. The common denominator is clearly the land. Because they were on the land they were infected by the dust. Therefore, the various concepts in the texts of the sixth plague point to the concept of the land. We call this ultimate concept conceptuality in the text. In conclusion, the conceptuality of the land is strongly highlighted in the text of the sixth plague as in the cases of the previous five plagues.
