영상의학과 예술융합 X레이 아트에 나타난 ‘추(醜)’의 미학적 연구 -로젠크란츠의 ‘추’ 이론을 중심으로- (Aesthetic study of‘ugliness’shown on the X-ray art fusing Radiology and art - Focusing on‘ugliness’theory of Johann Karl Friedrich Rosen kranz -)

초록

본 연구는 영상의학의 X레이 아트에 나타난 새로운 예술성에 주목하고 X레이 아트가 추의 미학과 어떤 맥락으로 연결되었는가를 고찰한 것이다. 인간의 몸 내부는 1895년 뢴트겐이 X레이를 발견하기 이전까지는 직접 해부를 함으로써 관찰할 수밖에 없었다. 그러나 X레이를 통해 각종 피사체의 내부를 투사하여 봄으로써 의사에게도 예술적 창발성과 상상력을 자극하게 되었다. 이후 X레이는 디지털시대가 도래하면서 ‘CT’, ‘MRI’, ‘초음파 검사’ 등으로 성능과 진단기술이 더욱 상승하게 된다. 본 연구는 영상의학의 개념, 역사, 종류, X레이 아트의 탄생과 기법에 대해 이론적으로 고찰하고 X-레이 아트와 추의 미학적 양상을 분석하였다.
X레이 사진은 섬뜩하고, 혐오스럽고, 역겹고, 초라하고, 우스꽝스러운 그로테스크 미학이다. 그러나 연구자는 X레이 사진을 역설적인 미의 단계로 환원되고 승화시키는 추의 미학적 동력에 주목하였다. 추의 미학의 핵심은 로젠크란츠가 주장한 무형태·불균제·부조화와 같은 몰형식성과 표현의 부정확성, 정신적 자유의 부정에 근거하는 왜곡이다. 왜곡을 다시 구분하면 비속, 혐오, 희화이다. 본 연구는 추의 미학을 고찰하기 위해 국내‧외의 X레이 아트와 X레이를 광고비주얼로 사용한 광고작품 100여 점 중 상징적인 24점을 선택하여 분석하였다.
연구 결과, 추의 미학은 X레이 아트가 추구하는 정신과 맞닿아 있고 몰형식성과 부정확성, 왜곡을 통해 새로운 미의식을 창출하고 있다는 것이다. X레이 아트의 추의 미학 인자는 미‧추의 구분을 넘나들며 다양하게 교차되었다. 일부 X레이 아트는 오히려 미적 숭고로 환원되었다. 특히 X레이가 첨단 디지털 기술을 만나 추의 미학이 더한층 새로워지고, 특이한 아날로그 변종 X레이 아트가 발견된 점은 미래의 추의 미학이 더욱 발전적으로 변화될 것이라는 확신을 갖게 하였다.
X레이 아트는 제작 시 잦은 방사능 노출로 인한 부작용이 있다. 그러나 원자력의 평화적, 예술적 이용이라는 측면에서 보면 대국민 홍보와 예술 표현의 저변확대라는 매우 유익한 순기능이 있다.
본 연구를 통해 X레이 아트를 창작하는 작가들이 단순한 과학과 예술의 협업을 넘어 새로운 시각의 추의 미학에 자극을 받아 그동안 미진했던 추의 미학에 대한 연구가 활성화되기를 기대한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to focus on new artistry emerging in the X-ray art of Radiology and investigate how X-ray art is connected to aesthetics of ugliness. The human body was able to be observed only through direct dissection before Roentgen discovered the X-ray in 1895. However, we can project the inside of various subjects through X-ray, which stimulates doctors’ artistic creative power and imagination. After that, with the advent of the digital era, the performance and diagnostic technologies in the Radiology have been more elevated to ‘CT’, ‘MRI’ and ‘Ultrasound examination’.
This study has theoretically investigated the concept, history and kinds of radiology and birth and technology of X-ray art and analyzed aesthetic aspects of X-ray art and ugliness. X-ray pictures are appalling, hateful, disgusting, shabby and comical grotesque aesthetics. However, a researcher has been focused on the aesthetic power of ugliness to convert X-ray pictures to the step of paradoxical beauty and sublime it. The essence of aesthetics of ugliness is deformation, inaccuracy of expression, distortion based on the negation of the spiritual freedom and vulgar, disgust and comic picture into which the distortion is classified like amorphousness, asymmetry and disharmony which Rosen Kranzberg claimed. In order to investigate the aesthetics of ugliness, this study has selected and analyzed symbolic 24 pieces among 100 X-rat art works and advertising pieces using X-ray as the advertising visual in Korea and other contries.
According to results of this study, aesthetics of ugliness is consistent with spirit which X-ray art purses and creates a new sense of beauty through amorphousness, inaccuracy and distortion. Aesthetic factors of ugliness in X-ray art go across the classification of beauty and ugliness and variously crossed. Some of X-ray art works are reduced to aesthetic sublimity. In particular, as X-ray has met the state-of-the-art digital technology, the aesthetics of ugliness has been more renewed. Since the unusual analog variant X–ray art is discovered, it is convinced to me that the aesthetics of ugliness will be developed in the future.
There is the side effect upon producing X-Ray art due to frequent exposure to radiation. However, from the persepectives of peaceful and artistic use of nuclear energy, it has very beneficially positive function which is informed people as PR and expands the base.
I hope that artists creating X-ray art are stimulated by aesthetics of new visual ugliness beyond the simple collaboration between science and art, and the studies on aesthetics of ugliness which have not been carried out much will be activated.
