초록

Until now, the discourse of Koreanness in Korean architecture can be summarized as an exploration of inheritance of tradition borrowing forms and proportions from traditional architecture in the 1960s, and formalization of the spirit and space of the past with critical regionalism in the 1990s. After 30 years or so with little new progress, there have been recent attempts to focus on the surrounding reality and common buildings and reflect them in a formal vocabulary, and this study aims to examine how these attempts can be read from the perspective of the discourse of Koreanness. By selecting four architects(teams) and comparing their architectural concepts and projects, the study found two advances from previous attempts. The first is that they have expanded the discussion of Koreanness, which used to be centered on ethnicity and tradition, to include regionalism, and the second is that they are actively engaging in social participation, unlike previous attempts that remained within the confines of the boudoir. These points suggest that they can be considered as one of the many alternatives for exploring a new Koreanness for the current era.
