해방 후 재건교회의 탄생 배경 연구 - 출옥성도 김린희, 최덕지 행적을 중심으로 (A study of Reconstuction Church's Birth Background after Liberation)

초록

해방과 더불어 한국교회를 재건해야 한다는 열망은 시대적 과제로 출옥성도들 사이에서 더욱 뜨겁게 타올랐다. 신사참배 반대우동을 전개하다 평양 형무소에서 출옥한 이기선 외 20명의 지도자들은 흩어지지 아니하고 주기철 목사가 시무하던 산정현 교회에 약 두 달간 체류하며 간증과 사경회를 지속하였고 한국교회 재건의 5대원칙을 발표하였다. 하지만 재건운동이 순조롭지 못하고 저항에 부딪히자 철저한 통회, 자복과 한국교회의 완전한 재건의 기치를 내세우며 김린희, 박신근, 최덕지, 이광록 등은 재건교회를 창립하게 된다. 특히 이북재건교회를 세운 김린희와 이남재건교회를 세운 최덕지의 행적은 그동안 재건교회의 창립과 변화만큼이나 알려진 것이 별로 없다.
평양신학교를 졸업한 김린희는 1938년 12월경부터 장로교계 지도자인 주기철, 채정민, 한상동, 이주원, 이광록, 방계성, 안이숙, 김형락, 박의흠, 김의창, 최봉석 등과 신사참배 반대운동을 통하여 사귀게 된다. 그리고 반대운동을 전국적으로 조직화 하는 일에 사용하도록 당시로서는 거금 600원을 한상동 측에 제공하였다. 이는 신사참배반대 운동을 위한 활동자금으로는 거의 유일하며 그의 전 재산이나 마찬가지였다. 하지만 주기철이 새 노회의 건설에 대하여 시기상조론을 펴며 소극적 자세를 취하자 이기선, 한상동, 김지성, 이주원, 박의흠, 김형락 등과 교류하며 새로운 노회의 재건을 위하여 전선(全鮮)적 운동을 전개할 것과 구극의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 노력할 것을 맹세하였다. 그의 의지는 강하고 투철하였다.
평양형무소에서 출옥한 지도자들은 옥중투쟁의 강도에 따라 재건운동의 방향을 달리하였다. 재건파는 옥중투쟁에 있어서도 일제의 5대 황민화 정책을 모두 죄로 간주하고 저항한 지도자들 즉 김린희, 최덕지, 박신근, 이광록 등에 의하여 창립 된다. 이는 결국 한국 기독교 장로교단의 해방 후 최초 분리 독립으로, 1946년 9월 25일 평양 서문밖교회 부근 고집사댁에서 30여 명의 지도자들이 모여 출범한 이북재건교회가 그것이다.
1901년생인 최덕지는 33세 되던 1932년 평양여자신학교에 입학하여 산정현교회에 출석하였으며 이때 박형룡, 송창근, 김재준, 한경직, 주기철 등과 만나게 된다. 졸업한 후에는 경남 마산지구 미순회(美洵會) 여전도사와 경남사립성경학원 교사로 일하였다. 1938년 조선기독교장로회 27회 총회에서 신사참배를 공식적으로 가결하자 본격적으로 반대운동에 나서게 되었다. 1940년에서 1942년까지 한상동과 8회에 걸친 회합으로 경남지역 신사참배반대운동을 조직적으로 전개하며 자금도 제공하였다. 최덕지는 연인원 약 400명에게 “신사참배는 죄이며 하나님의 나라가 임하기에 우상숭배는 어떠한 압력이 있더라도 굴복해서는 안된다”는 요지의 설교와 강연을 하였다. 3차례 예비검속으로 투옥되었으며 ‘비밀결사죄’와 ‘불경죄’까지 추가되어 정치범 취급을 받으며 평양형무소로 이송 수감되었다. 그리고 해방으로 출옥한 후에는 한국교회 재건을 위한 5개항의 결의안이 지지부진해지는 것을 보고 김린희와 함께 이북재건교회 창립에 참여하였다. 1945년 12월 월남한 이후에는 경남지역을 중심으로 간증과 부흥집회를 인도하다 1948년 2월 18일 이남재건교회를 창립하였다.
재건교회의 창립 즉 분리 독립에는 옥중투쟁의 방식 차이가 주요원인이라고 알려진다. 그것은 일경의 가혹한 박해를 이기지 못하여 그들이 요구하는 5대 황민화정책을 추종한 지도자 부류와 신사참배는 거부했지만 동방요배, 국기배례, 정오묵도, 황국신민서사 등은 양심의 문제라 하여 수용한 지도자 부류, 반면 끝까지 5대 정책을 성경에 위배된다하여 일절 거부한 지도자 부류로 나누어진 것이 분열의 핵심이라는 것이다. 하지만 이러한 이유 외에도 분리한 원인에는 몇 가지 이유가 더 있었다. 그것은 첫째 회개시키는 방법의 문제, 둘째 신사참배 한 교회와 재단의 재사용 문제, 셋째 기성교회 지도자와의 교재 문제였다. 하지만 이러한 내용은 이미 몇몇 사가들에 의하여 지적되기도 한다.
그런데 지금까지 알려지지 않은 주요원인은 또 있었다. 그것은 일제와 해방 정국 하에서도 우리사회에 여전히 상존하는 유교적 권위주의, 여성비하 사상, 여 성직에 대한 인식 부족, 그리고 신사참배반대운동과 재건운동을 함께 이끌었던 지도자들의 이중적 태도가 재건파가 분리되어 나간 주요 원인이었다.

As Korean Christianity has been repeating a remarkable growth, it also went through changes, conflicts, as well as splits, and unifications during seventy years after the liberation. Then it is forming numbers of dominations and religious bodies, and is taking its own line. Among these, especially Presbyterian churches are confident of calling themselves as the primogeniture of religious body and are exerting their influence on Korean politics, society, and even culture. However, they also draw condemnation upon themselves after making inappropriate decisions. In addition, they have disappointed not only Christians, but also non-believers through taking unfriendly attitudes in ‘a league of their own.’ Though it is not well revealed, fighting to obtain privileges between religious bodies is the main reason of disappointment.
The division of Reconstruction faction was the very first one to have the division of religious seats after the liberation. Somehow however, it is a fact that the existence of Reconstruction faction has been either indifferent or ignored by Korean Christianity in the history of Christianity, especially in the history of churches. What would be the reason? First, is it because the Reconstruction faction is a meaningless faction as much as it is fine to be ignored? Second, is it because the presence of Reconstruction faction is so insignificant to be ignored ever since its separation? Third, is it because its view of faith contains elements of cult according to theology? Fourth, if none of the above meets, then what would be the cause? Therefore, the author wishes to discover the problems between the leaders of Korean churches during the Reconstruction movement after observing discharged believers back in the liberation period, and investigate the realistic cause why there is only Reconstruction faction in Reconstruction church is remaining after approximately twenty members had joined the Reconstruction movement and had become members of Reconstruction faction after their discharge. The author has analyzed the early data of today’s Reconstruction church as well as the leaders’ sermons and records in order to investigate the separation background of Reconstruction church and Reconstruction faction after carefully studying the errors and ambivalent attitudes of the founder of Korea Theology, Paster Han, Sangdong’s past after the liberation period of time. The studies of Reconstruction church are almost nonexistent; only a small part of studies have covered about the resistance to Shinto worship, and 『The History of Reconstruction Church』 by Choi, Hoon have mentioned Reconstruction church in an aspect of ‘the history of persecution of Korean Churches.’ According to his record as a member of Reconstruction church, he covered the start, changes, and separation of Reconstruction church since the liberation to 1970s with only very limited resources of his own. On top of it, he could not mention properly about the early situation of Southern Reconstruction church since he has spent time in Northern Reconstruction church only, and because the simply studied the historical background so there are not enough researched about the history of separation, the characteristics of Reconstruction church or thoughts of leaders. However, the studies of Park, Hyungryong are well covered his life, thoughts, and theological arguments through Presbyterian churches, and numerous researches were studied about Han, Sangdong in Korea Theology religious body. However, the results of many of researches on the coercion of shrine worship and the reconstruction movement were showing the aspect of division and strife that appear in the process of Korean religious organizations' defection.
Therefore the purpose of this article is to view the birh background of Reconstruction church through the paths of Kim, Linhee and Choi, Dukgee who worked together for Korean churches reconstruction and built Reconstruction church each in North and South Korea after the discharge at Pyungyang prion. Because there were direct and indirect connections between the religious leaders as well as the resistance to Shinto worship in the start of Reconstruction church, the birth background of Presbyterian Reconstruction church is going to be studied after carefully looking at the Reconstruction faction and the leaders’ division process.
