초록

본 연구는 중국조선족 작가 최국철이 『간도전설』(1999), 『광복의 후예들』(2010)의 연작이라고 언급한 장편소설 『공화국의 후예들』(2016)을 대상으로 작가의 고향인 ‘남대천’이라는 공간으로 회귀하거나 이탈, 방황하는 일상의 평범한 인물 형상을 통해 작품 내용과 형식적 특징을 살피고, 중국이라는 국가 정체성을 수용하면서도 비껴서거나 이탈하는 지점들을 포착하고 그 의미를 밝히는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 최국철의 『공화국의 후예들』을 형식과 내용 측면에서 체제 내적 순응과 일탈 양상으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이는 최국철에 대한 접근이나 작품 이해방식이 국가, 민족으로만 환원시켜 논의해왔던 전작들과는 다른 지점으로 최국철 삼부작을 서사적으로 연결하기 위한 선행작업이 될 것이다.
우선 『공화국의 후예들』에 드러난 체제 내적 순응과 일탈 양상을 국가적 전통의 현대적 수용, 조선민족 미학과의 접속과 거리두기 측면으로 나누어 작품을 분석했다. 최국철은 형식적인 측면에서 중국 명·청대 장편소설의 보편적인 체재였던 장회체 소설 양식을 수용하면서도 1인칭 서술자 변용을 통해 서술자의 제한된 시선을 통해 당시 과거 사건에 대한 개인적 견해나 이념을 드러내지 않고 거리를 둔다. 이로 인해 독자들은 그 안에 내재된 숨은 의미와 모순을 찾아내는 적극적 읽기를 가능하게 한다. 또한 내용적인 측면에서 작가는 각 장에 숨은 영웅과도 같은 평범한 인물들의 에피소드를 다룸으로써 리얼리티를 담보하고 있으며 이는 80년대 북한 문학과의 친연성으로도 읽을 수 있다. 한편 최국철은 중국조선족이라는 특수성으로 인해 작품을 통해 남북한 문학과의 유사성을 드러내면서도 작가의 고향인 남대천이라는 공간 안에서 개혁개방과 시장경제 이후 국가와 민족을 초월하는 다양한 가치 충돌 요인들을 포착하고 남대천 공간에 새롭게 구성되는 다양한 정체성에 주목하고 있다. 이러한 지점은 최국철이 『공화국의 후예들』을 통해 남대천이라는 공간을 창조하고 그 안에서 새로운 정체성을 모색함으로써 국가와 민족을 넘어서려는 시도를 보여주는 것으로 읽힌다.
따라서 최국철 『공화국의 후예들』에 나타난 체제 내적 순응과 일탈의 양상을 국가적 전통의 현대적 수용, 조선민족 미학과의 접속과 거리두기 측면으로 나누어 구체적으로 살피는 작업은 중국조선족이 처한 복잡하고 특수한 상황을 이해하는 계기가 될 뿐만 아니라 국가-민족으로만 환원되었던 그간의 문학적 상상을 넘어서고자 하는 전망을 엿볼 수 있게 한다.

영어초록

This study is relation to Choi Guk-cheol( who is a Chinese- Korean Writer)'s Descendants of the Republic (2016), which was mentioned by him as trilogy together with Legend of Gando (1999) and Descendants of the Independance (2010). The purpose of this study is to examine the content and formal characteristics of the work through the character of ordinary persons returning or wandering to the space of Namdaecheon, the author's hometown, and to catch the distancing point from national identity of China even accepting it, and finally to reveal its meaning. To this end, Choi's Descendants of the Republic were analyzed by dividing into internal conformity and deviating aspects on the system in terms of form and content. This will be a prior work to connect Choi's trilogy narratively, which is different from the previous works that have been discussed by returning the work only to the nation and the people.
First of all, the work was analyzed by dividing the internal conformity and deviating aspect on the system revealed in Descendants of the Republic into the modern acceptance of national traditions, connection with and distance from the national aesthetics of Joseon. In terms of formality, Choi accepts the novel style of Zhang Hui-che, which was a universal style of Chinese Ming and Qing full-length novels, but distances without revealing personal views or ideologies about past events through the narrator-protagonist transformation. This makes it possible for readers to actively read to find hidden meanings and contradictions inherent in it. In addition, in terms of content, the author guarantees reality by dealing with episodes of ordinary characters such as heroes hidden in each chapter, which can also be read as similarity to North Korean literature in the 1980's. Meanwhile, Choi reveals similarities with south and north korean literature through his works due to the peculiarity of the Chinese-Korean, but catches the various causes of value conflict to transcend the state and the nation after reform and market economy in the space of Namdaecheon, his hometown, and focuses on the diverse identity which is newly-composed in Namdaecheon. This point is read as showing Choi's attempt to transcend the nation and the people by creating a space called Namdaecheon through Descendants of the Republic and seeking a new identity in it.
Therefore, this specific study on Choi's Descendants of the Republic not only gives an opportunity to understand the complex and peculiar situation of the Chinese-Korean but also gives a glimpse of the prospect of going beyond the previous literary imagination returned only to the nation and the people.
