민속학 최전선의 점검과 전위적 연구의 실천 (Folklore frontline examination and avant-garde research practice)

초록

‘민속학의 최전선’은 2016년 민속학자대회의 기획주제이며, 이 글은 기조발표 논문이다. ‘최전선’은 가장 앞서가는 연구활동을 은유한 것인데, 더 적극적인 논의를 하기 위해 ‘전위적 연구’를 끌어들였다. 최전선의 현장을 1)최신 연구성과를 발표하는 학술대회 현장, 2) 신진학자들의 학위논문 발표 현장, 3) 현지조사의 현장으로 나누어 보았다.
학술대회에서 발제자가 최전선으로 문제될 만한 전위적 연구를 하는 것이 기본이지만, 토론자도 발제에 대한 질의와 논평에 머물지 않고, 해당주제에 대한 독창적 연구의 일단을 펼치면서 논쟁을 벌여야 최전선이 넓게 확대된다. 청중도 제3자적 시각에서 발제와 토론의 우열을 평가하는데 만족하지 않고, 스스로 발제자나 토론자라면 어떤 발제와 토론을 할 것인가 하고 자기 문제로 끌어안아야 할 뿐 아니라, 발제와 토론을 들으면서 제3의 연구를 구상하는 계기를 만들어야 한다. 그러면 학술대회에 형성된 최전선은 발제자에서 토론자, 청중으로 폭넓게 형성될 수 있다.
학위논문은 학문 후속세대에게 석박사 학위를 주는 연구발표인 까닭에, 기존 학문에 도전하는 논문의 이론적 독창성, 질적 수준, 양적 방대함을 모두 갖춘 연구로서 학문의 최전선을 이룬다. 따라서 개인적인 학위 취득에 머물지 않으려면 학위논문은 반드시 단행본으로 출판하여 학계에 공유해야 하며, 현지조사 자료집도 함께 출판하는 것이 바람직하다. 민속학은 현지조사와 불가분의 관계에 있는 까닭이다. 현지조사의 최전선을 이루려면 자기 전공영역에 관한 조사를 장기지속적으로 실천하고 그 결과를 보고서로 꾸준히 간행해야 한다. 자기 민속지가 없는 민속연구자가 절름발이 민속학자라면, 일련의 조사보고서를 지속적으로 간행하는 분들은 민속학의 최전선에서 실천하는 진정한 민속학자이다.
전위적인 연구자는 민속학의 기존 패러다임을 해체하는 도전적 조사와 모험적 연구를 해야 한다. 그러자면 실험적 현지조사와 민속지 작성은 물론, 자기가 수립한 독창적 분석틀을 토대로 새로운 연구영역을 확대하며, 논리와 이론의 개척은 물론 자료와 범주도 확장해야 전위적 연구의 길이 열린다. 시대를 통섭하는 종적 통섭학의 이론 개척과, 인접학문의 불모지를 개척하는 시베리아기원설의 극복, ‘생활사료’의 개척으로 역사민속학의 새 지평을 여는 일 또한 전위적 연구의 실천이다. 그러므로 통섭적 연구와 노마드적 연구를 전위적으로 실천함으로써 민속학의 한계를 벗어나 한국학과 인문학문의 새 전망을 제시할 수 있어야 한다.

영어초록

‘Forefront of folklore’ is the theme of the folklore scholar conference in 2016, and this writing is the keynote paper. 'Front line' is a metaphor for the most advanced research activities, and in order to have more active discussions, I have included 'avant-garde research’. The field of the forefront was divided into 1) a conference site to present the latest research achievements, 2) a thesis dissertation of new scholars, and 3) an on-site survey.
In the conference, it is essential for the speaker to conduct an avant-garde research that would be problematic at the forefront, but the debate will not be limited to inquiries and commentary on the presentation, but the frontline will be broadened only if you engage in a debate by opening a piece of original research on the subject. The audience should not be satisfied with just evaluating the excellence of the presentation and discussion from a third-party perspective, and the audience not only should think from the perspective that if they themselves are the speaker or the debater, what kind of presentation he or she should discuss, but also should make this an opportunity to think of the 3rd research. Then, the forefront formed in the conference can be broadened from the speaker to the debater and audience.
Because graduate theses are research publications that give postgraduate degrees to succeeding generations, they form the frontline of the study as researches with the theoretical originality, the quality level and the quantitative immensity challenging the existing studies. Therefore, if you do not want to be content with just getting a personal degree, you should publish your graduate thesis as a monograph and share it with the academic community. That’s because folklore is inseparable from field research. In order to be at the forefront of field research, it is necessary to conduct long-term surveys on the area of one’s major field and to publish the results in reports continuously. If a folklore researcher without a folklore publication is a lame folklorist, those who publish a series of research reports are true folklore scholars who practice at the forefront of folklore.
An avant-garde researcher must conduct challenging research and adventurous study to dismantle the existing paradigm of folklore. Then, not only with experimental on-site researches and folklore publication issuing, he or she should expand the research area based on the original analysis framework established by oneself, and should not only open up the logic and theory but also expand the data and categories in order to open the path to an avant-garde study. Theoretical pioneering of longitudinal consilience that consolidates an era, pioneering the barrenness of neighboring scholarship that overcomes the Siberian origin theory and pioneering of “living historical materials” to open a new horizon for folklore can be practices of avant-garde research. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to present new prospects of Korean studies and humanities out of the limits of folklore by practicing longitudinal consilience research and nomadic research radically.
