초록

조선의용대의 지휘본부는 기존 대본부에서 총대부라는 명칭으로 1940 년부터 1942년까지 중경에서 활동했다. 중경에 도착한 총대부는 일본군의중경 공습과 전시수도 중경의 반공 우경화, 그리고 광복군 창설 이슈에 전면 대응했다. 특히 광복군 창설 대응을 위해 조선의용대의 실제 ‘일한 증거’와 역량을 중경 각계에 홍보하는 방식으로 광복군 창설이 아닌 조선의용대의 무장대오 확충을 강조했다.
한편 조선의용대의 2년 차 공작과제인 북상 항일과 대오 무장화도 이어나갔다. 성립 2주년을 맞아 대오의 향후 계획을 중경 각계에 거듭 알리는한편, 확대간부회의를 개최해 3년 차 공작과제에 대한 간부진의 이해를 높였다. 그 과정에서 제3지대의 중경 집결을 비롯, 북진분대, 계림판사처 대원, 그리고 전방의 주요 간부진까지 중경에 집결하면서 조선의용대의 지휘본부로서 중경의 위상이 일시적으로 높아졌다.
하지만 총대부는 제2차 세계대전 확대 등 국제정세의 변동 속에서 중경에 일시 집결한 대오를 북상시키는 한편, 경비 확보를 위해 미 해군부와접촉했다. 총대부는 1940년 중경 정착과 중국 당국 등을 상대로 한 광복군창설 대응, 그리고 공작과제 재정비에 매진했다면 1941년부터는 대오 북상과 동시에 총대부 조직을 동남아로 확장하고 교섭대상을 중국 중심에서미국까지 확대하는 등 외연을 넓혀나갔다.

영어초록

The command headquarters of the Korean Volunteer Corps(朝鮮義勇隊) was operated in Chongqing(重慶) from 1940 to 1942 under the name of General Headquarters(總隊部). The General Headquarters, which arrived in Chongqing, responded to the Japanese military’s air raids on Chongqing, the anti-communist rightward shift in the wartime capital of Chongqing, and the issue of the creation of the Korean Liberation Army(韓國光復軍).
In particular, in order to respond to the creation of the Korean Liberation Army, they emphasized the expansion of the armed forces of the Korean Volunteer Corps rather than the creation of the Korean Liberation Army by publicizing the “evidence of actual work” and capabilities of the Korean Volunteer Corps to all sectors of Chongqing.
Meanwhile, the Korean Volunteer Corps’ second-year task of moving north to fight against Japan and arming the units continued. In celebration of the second anniversary of its establishment, they repeatedly informed all sectors of Chongqing of the units’ future plans and held an expanded executive meeting to increase the executives’ understanding of the third-year task. In the process, the status of Chongqing as the command center of the Korean Volunteer Corps was temporarily elevated as the 3rd Zone gathered in Chongqing, as well as the Northern Expeditionary Unit, the Guilin(桂林) Office members, and even the key frontline officers gathered in Chongqing.
However, the General Headquarters temporarily moved the troops gathered in Chongqing northward amidst the changes in the international situation, such as the expansion of World War II, and contacted the US Navy Department to secure security. If the General Headquarters was focused on settling in Chongqing in 1940, responding to the establishment of the Liberation Army against the Chinese authorities, and reorganizing the task of operations, from 1941, it expanded the organization of the General Headquarters to Southeast Asia at the same time as the troops moved northward, and expanded the scope of negotiations from China to the US.
